At  7:30 Wednesday evening, Aug. 17, Deputy Antoine Smith and Clarence W. “Juice” McKenney squared off with guns drawn, but no one was shot. 

Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a reckless driver in an orange Camaro coming toward Montross on Route 202.  Deputy Smith was driving toward Mt. Holly on 202 when he encountered the orange Camaro driving

erratically and crossing into his lane of traffic.  Smith activated his emergency lights and turned around, coming behind the Camaro.  A pursuit ensued, from Nomini Bridge to Fisherman’s Lane where the driver, McKenney, pulled into his own driveway. 

McKenney got out of his vehicle and went into his house.  Smith drew his weapon, and McKenney came out of the house with a weapon of his own and drew down on Smith.  Instead of shooting, Smith dodged into the woods.  McKenney got into the police car and drove away.  However, he was unable to get out onto 202 because, by that time, it had been blocked off.  McKenney returned to his house.  After talking to Sheriff  C.O. Balderson on the telephone, McKenney agreed to turn himself in.

McKenney was charged with eluding, grand larceny, resisting arrest, brandishing a firearm, attempted murder of a police officer, reckless driving, using a police radio in the commission of a crime and obstruction of justice.  He is being held without bond.  
“I’m thankful that a threat was eliminated without tragedy,” Balderson said.
