Drifter campers rule the Dome PDF  | Print |  E-mail

altBasketball mania was the theme last week at Colonial Beach High School. The 22nd annual Drifter Basketball Camp was held last week at the air-conditioned Drifterdome, with 82 campers learning fundamentals and competing in fun games and contests. Steve Swope, camp director and head varsity basketball coach at Colonial Beach High School, was extremely pleased with the turnout and success of the week long camp.
“We had a great group of kids who came in every day ready to work hard, have fun and compete in this great sport of basketball,” he said. “Campers were a delight to work with and really improved their game throughout the course of the week.”
Two sessions were held during the day for two different age brackets. Boys and girls, ages 5-12 participated from 9 a.m. until noon each day, followed by ages 13-18 from 2-5 p.m. along with another young group in the afternoon.
The campers learned the six basic fundamentals of basketball as they rotated through stations of ball handling, passing, offensive moves, rebounding, shooting and defensive moves. Campers were also charted daily in three shooting contests: Hot shot, 3-pointers and free throws. Games of 1 vs. 1, 3 vs. 3, and 5 vs. 5 were played throughout the week, concluding with tournament championships on the last day. Each camper also received an evaluation card and Drifter Camp T-shirt.

The Drifter camp coaching staff would like to send a special thanks go to Dockside Restaurant, McDonald’s, J’s Cars, High Tides on the Potomac, J-5 Real Estate Investment, Days Inn, F&A Auto Sales, BB&T, Farm Bureau Insurance, Happy Clam Seafood Restaurant, Domino’s Pizza, VFW Post 105574 and Riverboat on the Potomac for sponsoring camp.
Many thanks go to the fantastic coaching staff for assistance with this year’s camp-Jonathan Parker, John Parker, Earl Payton, Paul Miles, Kurt Smith and Casey Johnson, along with current and former varsity and JV boys’ basketball players at CBHS. Also, a big thanks to support staff workers for keeping the camp rolling successfully: Susie Foster, Lee Colley, Ronnie Peyton, Barbara Moxley, Judy Long, Bill Antosz and booster club staff.
“Campers, continue to work hard on your game to prepare for the upcoming season this winter and remember, the harder you work, the luckier you get,” Swope said. “Continue to work hard in the off-season and we look forward to seeing everyone at Youth Basketball in the winter.”
