Colonial Beach hosts newest 2010 Hydro-Turf APBA Watercross national tour site
With 25 turns around over 27 buoys in the Potomac River, professional and novice Jet Ski race enthusiasts gave watercrafts race fans the show of their lives. Last weekend, Colonial Beach took center stage as the 2010 Hydro-Turf APBA Watercross National Tour included the town as their newest featured tour attraction.
The featured race included the Pro Runabout competition, which was won by Dusting Farthing (men) and Amy Green (women) on both days of the event. Both racers are considered to among the best watercraft athletes in the country.
Other than the obvious bragging rights, as the winner of the competition, a $10,000 cash award and sizeable consolation awards were an incentive to finish first or at the top of the racer’s class.
The 2010 series consists of five double round events featured throughout the United States
Sponsored by the town of Colonial Beach and Westmoreland in partnership with the APBA, onlookers were treated with the rare experience of seeing some of the top racers in the world of water cross racing. Although many years ago Colonial Beach had been the site of regional watercraft racing, this particular event was historical for its national prominence.
The town of Colonial Beach left no stone unturned as it gave the contestants, their crews, print and television media outlets and the public the red carpet treatment. Among the festivities featured was the “Kick-Off Party” held at the Town Stage Area and after race parties given at the Riverboat and High Tides Restaurant.
