King George Elementary Students Start Businesses |
|

It was Market Day at King George Elementary School and for the students in Mrs. Valerie Burke’s fourth, fifth and sixth grade math classes, this day marked the culmination of several months of diligent business work. These students participated in a Mini-Economy Unit of Study in which they learned how economies function, selected partners and brainstormed product ideas. Students then had to create and administer a market survey of their peers, analyze data and decide on a product. A parent advisory board helped determine how students would earn seed money for their products. In order to make their production dreams come true, students had to research the cost and location of raw materials, design a prototype, make their products, and decide on a marketing approach. On Market Day, students set up displays in the school cafeteria and ‘sold” their products to students and staff. Students marketed a variety of unique and creative products such as, duct tape wallets, stress balls, clay animals, miniature bowling alleys and pencil holders from recycled water bottles. .As a follow up, students calculated their profits and evaluated the success of their ventures. These future entrepreneurs are already planning their strategies for next year.
