OUTDOOR REPORT - August 18, 2010 PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 17 August 2010 19:37

The weekend was a bit breezy but beautiful.

Rappahannock River
Bass were hitting on the wood, but then the rain changed the river level. No report yet how that affected things. It should be good for the river to get some water in it. Catfish are biting on fresh bait. Some gar are still in the river and could provide great bow fishing action.

Potomac River
Shady Lane Seafood, (804) 224-7878, reported that he has heard the croaker are in deeper waters at buoy #29 and also down at buoy “H” at Bluff Point using squid. The catfish seemed to ease off some this week.  Anglers are trolling in about 7-8 feet of water along the shores from Dahlgren down to Bluff Point for rockfish. The rockfish seem to be going after the small soft crabs along the shores.  Small bluefish are also being caught around buoy #29.

Inland waters
At Motts, 786-8989, the fishing over all seemed slow. However, they are still experiencing great bass action. A nice size bass was caught measuring 22.5” and 5.1 pounds. The bass seem to be the most active of the species at Motts.  Many of the smaller size ones being caught by anglers using a mix of tackle to entice them.

Saltwater
Capt. Rogers from the Midnight Sun reports that Spanish mackerel are starting to show up at Windmill Point.  Flounder are being caught near Tangier Island. Blues are being caught around Smith Point and also at the Middle Grounds in the evening time by trolling with planers and rubber eels.  Anglers are pulling in blues that are 3-5 pounds from the Middle Grounds.
