OUTDOOR REPORT - August 11, 2010 PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 10 August 2010 22:33

The weekend was beautiful. However, the heat has been a regular problem for anglers although the fish still seem to be biting.

Rappahannock River
Anglers are reporting good croaker fishing at Tappahannock. Upriver the catfishing on the river has been very good. Fish deeper water with fresh cut bait for the best results. The rain last week did raise the upper river some and stain it but the river dropped back to lower levels making it nearly impossible to use a canoe to float down. Smallmouth fishing should be good in deeper holes with water flow into the holes.

Potomac River—
Shady Lane Seafood (804-224-7878) reported some nice rockfish caught off the beach at Colonial Beach. Some were up to 14 pounds. Some rock action is still occurring near Swan Point. Spot are very small now but good bait. Croaker are scattered up and downriver but very near to shore feeding. Perch are following the croaker. The perch are up to ¾ a pound! Crabs are bigger and better this week. Go see Elgin for his new perch jig with moveable eyes. The croaker also like it.

Inland waters
Motts 786-8989—is still experiencing great bass action. However, a few days last week were tough. Shellcracker are biting near the island in the coves on the lower end of the reservoir. A young angler caught a nice bluegill on a red wiggler off the pier. Catfish are still biting chicken liver well.

Saltwater—
Cobia are still being reported near the CBBT. Some sheepshead are also biting. Spadefish slacked off and croaker in the bay are tough to find of any decent size. The Spanish mackerel are way behind and are just now being caught with some regularity near Deltaville. Some bluefish and rockfish are being caught near Reedville. Off Virginia Beach the fishing is better for all species.
