Hot weather or not, anglers are doing very well on the water.
Rappahannock River
Pern’s sells plenty of bait (775-7817) and often has tidbits of info on what anglers are buying the most of. Right now they are selling squid, clams and nightcrawlers more than any other bait. The catfish are biting very best on nightcrawlers still and are not as interested in other bait. Larger catfish are interested in fresh cutbait. Drift fish in deep holes to catch them.
Bass are hitting very well on plastic Senkos during the day and topwater at night.
Bowfin are still biting well although the bass anglers are not too thrilled with catching one.
Wade fishing upriver is turning up; fish away from heavily fished areas. Motts Landing is dead as far as fishing. However, upriver or downriver the action is MUCH better.
Potomac River
Shady Lane Seafood (804-224-7878) reported the croaker have slacked off some but a few smaller rockfish are in the area. Some small bluefish were reported to have been seen but so far no customers have caught any. Catfish are of course present. Elgin also noted that skates have been hooked and brought to the boat.
Some pan-sized croaker are hitting squid, shrimp and Fishbites. Fish the deeper water and don’t be afraid to drift fish. I caught some up to 18 inches.
Upriver the bass action in the creek mouths has been very good if you are methodical and slow in your presentations. Jigging through the grass and also running spinnerbaits along the grass worked better than Senkos this past week.
Inland waters
Motts (786-8989) reported continued great bass action this week on plastic worms. One citation bass was caught with some near misses.
Saltwater
In the lower bay the action for spadefish, sheepshead and triggerfish is good around the CBBT. Spanish slacked off on the oceanfront but around Deltaville they are now trolling and catching them. A few were caught around Reedville as well. Flounder of keeper size are more regular now. The Cell and #42 are popular areas.
