OUTDOOR REPORT - June 30, 2010 PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 29 June 2010 22:16

It is HOT out there, but the fishing is still very good early and late in the day.

Rappahannock River
Pern’s Supermarket (775-7817) reported lots of anglers buying bait such as shrimp, clam snouts, bloodworms and nightcrawlers. I used the shrimp from Pern’s to get some nice pan-sized croaker.
Smaller catfish are biting very well on cutbait and nightcrawlers. Bass are still reportedly hitting spinnerbaits and jigged plastics on woody structure in the river. Go shady and deep.

Potomac River
Aqua Land (301-259-0571) is reporting croaker and perch biting on bloodworms and cut squid. They also claim anglers are taking rockfish off the beach. Some spot and catfish are also biting.
Occoquan River is reportedly good for bass fishing. The Kelly worms are a hot item according to Ken’s Tackle (540-8981-1011).

Inland waters
The water temp at Motts (540-786-8989) is 86 degrees, and plenty of bass of all sizes are being caught. Shaky head worms are popular for bass. Plastics of some type are the best bet for bass. The catfish are hitting liver and some anglers are taking a dozen fish each trip. Bream are slowing down with the heat but still some nice fish are being caught.
Pond action has slowed. However, the topwater bite at dark is really good for bass. I took a quick trip to a pond to try a new plastic worm out and my daughter took two very nice crappie back to back on it. The Berkley Powerbait Slim Shaky Worm was a hot item for the crappie. On my return trip at dark I used a Manns Phat Rat to entice two largemouth to smash the lure right at the bank. I found that burning the bait across the surface, stopping it suddenly and then giving it a slight twitch was explosive.

Saltwater
Capt. Ryan Rogers (804-580-0245) is still booking late July and August trips, but for now he moved down to Virginia Beach for some offshore/inshore fishing for a month. So far he has gotten into some nice spadefish and is going offshore for tuna.
