OUTDOOR REPORT - June 23, 2010 PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 22 June 2010 21:51

It is HOT out there, but the fishing is still very good. Fish early and late to beat the heat. Don’t forget sunscreen.

Rappahannock River
Pern’s Supermarket (540-775-7817) reported lots of anglers buying clam snouts and nightcrawlers. The smaller catfish are biting very well. If you need dinner try some bait from Pern’s and fish along the shoreline in 3-6 feet of water with a float. Bass seem to be hitting plastics very well in the river.

Potomac River
Aqua Land (301-259-0571) is reporting smaller croaker and perch biting on bloodworms and cut squid. There are a lot of eels in the river.
Columnist report: Dad and I hit the river to try the boat and test some gear. We fished just outside of Machodoc Creek and caught some croaker and plenty of perch. We used Fishbites and bait shrimp for bait. The fish were eating size. There is a lot of bait in the river.

Inland waters
The water temp at Motts (786-8989) is 86 degrees and plenty of bass of all sizes are being caught. Many are being caught near the dam. Some very nice catfish and bream are also being taken. Plastics are the best bet for bass while nightcrawlers are the best baits for bream and catfish. Try early morning and late evening for the bass on topwater.

Saltwater
Capt. Ryan Rogers (804-580-0245) is putting clients on plenty of rockfish and even got into a few bluefish recently. Some big croaker are hitting in the bay now. We also heard that spades and Spanish are at Virginia Beach. Capt. Ryan is still booking late July and August trips but for now he moved down to Virginia Beach for some offshore/inshore fishing for a month.

Notes
June 25 and July 23: Night fishing event at Motts Run Reservoir.
