OUTDOOR REPORT - June 16, 2010 PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 15 June 2010 23:42

Fishing has been really good. Many anglers are hitting the water early and late due to the heat.

Rappahannock River
Ken’s Tackle (540-898-1011) reported great catfishing. Larger fish are taking cut white perch.
Pern’s Supermarket (540-775-7817) reported lots of anglers buying bloodworms and nightcrawlers.

Potomac River
Shady Lane Seafood (804-224-7878) is reporting spot in the area. Elgin said that a spot ¾ of a pound took a piece of shrimp. That is a nice spot! Normally bloodworms are the better bait. Try the Virginia side of the Potomac above Wilkerson’s. Croaker are taking shrimp too. Some nicer fish are mixed in with the smaller ones. Swan Point has been a good place to fish. Try drop offs. Catfish are everywhere in the river. If you have a boat, fish for them around structure such as the lighthouses, buoys, rip rap or in holes. Cut bait or anything smelly will do the trick.
Some smaller rockfish are chasing bunker fry. Crabs are slowly picking up and some soft shells are being caught.
Ken’s reported night fishing from croaker is decent at Colonial Beach while the white perch and catfish are biting during the day.
Bass are taking plastics in the grass now. On high tide you can try a buzz bait over the grass. Cranks jigged next to the grass will take nice fish too.

Inland waters
As we reported last week, the pond fishing is in its typical summer pattern now. Live minnows will take bass and crickets will take bream and bass.

Saltwater
Capt. Ryan Rogers (804-580-0245) is putting clients on nice fish to include rockfish in the 20-30 inch range. He can take you anywhere on the bay for pretty much any species of fish. Give him a call to see what he can hook you up with.

Notes
HOPYARD BOAT RAMP appears to be open now. It looks nice. Have not tried out yet to check the angle on the top of the ramp, but the rest of it looks nicer. More work will be done to the piers but the ramp is open.
June 5-19: Spring squirrel season on private lands and some WMAs to include Pettigrew and Phelps in our area.
June 25 and July 23: Night fishing event at Motts Run Reservoir.
