OUTDOOR REPORT - December 16, 2009

Fishing is still good for those that can withstand the cold temperatures. Striped bass are hitting well in the lower Potomac and the bay. Hunting is still going well with plenty of does being taken.

Potomac River

Shady Lane Seafood, (804) 224-7878, reported that the rockfish are hitting near Ragged Point in about 40-foot deep water.  The fish were hitting on 12-inch Sassy Shads on double and umbrella rigs. Down near Blackstone Island a 17-pounder was caught trolling 6 inch Sassy Shad. Larger catfish have picked up and are biting in front of Dahlgren.
Elgin said to call ahead to see if he will have crabs. The ones he was getting were beautiful but he is not sure if he will have many for the weekend.  His new hours are Thursday through Saturdays.
Rappahannock River
No report

Inland waters

Area ponds are still giving up nice bass and crappie for the few who are interested and fishing slow.

Saltwater
Captain Ryan Rogers, owner of the Midnight Sun, (804) 580-0245, reported the best fishing of the year is happening now in the bay.  There are lots of fish and lots of bait. Fish are being caught from Smith Point to Point Lookout.  Fish are in the 28 inch to 44 inch range and being caught on parachute and umbrella rigs. Captain Ryan says that although the fishing is great in the bay, he has a lot of customers wanting to fish the ocean so he will be headed that way soon.

Hunting

Pern’s Supermarket, (540) 775-7817, reported they had five deer checked in.  There are plenty of squirrels and rabbits available, and if you care to fox hunt, they are numerous too.
