OUTDOOR REPORT - December 9, 2009

Fishing is still good for those still after it. A ride to Lake Anna revealed some anglers fishing under birds. Likely the stripers were biting. Hunting is still going well with plenty of does being taken. Despite the rain and miserable weather, the Disabled Veterans Hunt went well with approximately 19 deer taken.

Potomac River

Shady Lane Seafood,  (804) 224-7878, reported that the rockfish are hitting very well near Ragged Point to Stuart Petroleum. The fish were after 12 Sassy Shads and Mojos in chartreuse. Down near Blackstone Island the fish were after 6-inch Sassy Shads when trolled.

Elgin still has crabs and they are beautiful in size. Call ahead though to be sure he has them in stock.

Ken’s Tackle, (540) 898-1011, reported customers going after striped bass but they don’t have any details.

Rappahannock River

No report.

Inland waters

Area ponds were giving up nice crappie and bass on minnows, one source reported.

Ken’s says that people fishing the trout pond are taking fish on Berkley Green eggs.

Saltwater

Captain Ryan Rogers, owner of the Midnight Sun, (804) 580-0245, is still putting customers on some of the best fall fishing yet. He had several 40-inch fish boated recently.

Hunting

Perns Supermarket, (540) 775-7817, reported one 8-point buck.
