Mark and Missy Fike
The waterways in our area are in much better shape this week than they have been. Hunting has been decent, but big bucks seem to be elusive.
Potomac River
Shady Lane Seafood, (804) 224-7878, reported that the rockfish are hitting very well near Ragged Point and below that some. Try the oil docks in 50 feet of water if you have the boat to get there. There are still birds working the area, but the fishing has slacked off locally.
There are plenty of catfish biting all over. He still has some crabs and will go weekend to weekend. Call ahead!
Ken’s Tackle, (540) 898-1011, reported good crappie action in Aquia Creek again. Some stripers are still being caught on chartreuse, white and Manns Stretch lures.
Rappahannock River
Very few people are fishing the river. However, Elgin reported that the striper action at the mouth of the river was awesome.
Inland waters
Ken’s Tackle reported that the trout pond was hot on Berkley Gulp in chartreuse eggs.
Saltwater
Captain Ryan Rogers, owner of the Midnight Sun, (804) 580-0245, reported that the rockfish are hitting in the shipping channel from Windmill Point to Point Lookout. He is getting some nice fish 34-44 inches with a few smaller ones thrown in. The birds are working well. Most fish are caught trolling now. This is a great fall trophy fishing. Give him a call if you want in on the action.
Hunting
Perns Supermarket, (540) 775-7817, reported some decent deer this week to include an 8 and a 9-point buck. Doe days for King George begin in force this Saturday. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it before firing!
