The river was still stained on Sunday, but the Potomac looked like it was in good shape. The rut appears to finally have started. Bucks have been observed chasing does, but there seems to be a number of smaller bucks this year.
Potomac River
Shady Lane Seafood, (804) 224-7878, reported that the rockfish were back and in force. Most of the fish are being found on the Maryland side. Try the Popes Creek and Blackstone Island area or the channel off Cobb Island. A nice fish 47 inches long was caught from the channel area near Cobb Island. Elgin thinks he will have crabs a little while longer.
Ken’s Tackle, (540) 898-1011, reported good crappie action in Aquia Creek and some were 2 pounds. There are lots of stripers in that area too. Rat-L-Traps seem to be the best lure.
Rappahannock River
The river was still stained, but some crappie are being caught. We also heard of bass anglers (the few that are fishing) taking some nice chunky fish on deep cranks and jigs off wood structure.
Saltwater
Captain Ryan Rogers, owner of the Midnight Sun, (804) 580-0245, reported that the rockfish, the BIG rockfish are biting well even during the storm. He is getting some nice fish 36-43 inches. This is great fallfor trophy fishing. Give him a call if you want in on the action.
Hunting
Perns Supermarket, (540) 775-7817, reported 10 deer this week. The biggest was a 6-point. Be sure and stop by to check your deer, possibly get a pic we can run and a cold soda or snack.
Ken’s Tackle had a 15-point buck checked in. Few does have been checked.
