OUTDOOR REPORT - November 4, 2009

It seems that every weekend for a few weeks now we have had rain. That has not stopped some guys and gals from getting out and taking some fish and game though.

Potomac River

Shady Lane Seafood, (804) 224-7878, reported that the rockfish are hot from 4 p.m. until dark. The fish are good sized and up to 8 pounds too! Try trolling 4-inch shad on bucktails or even umbrellas. Carter’s Lumps and upriver along the Maryland side has produced some fish. There are even some rockfish breaking in the evenings. Catfish are really chowing down. Elgin had 300 pounds of catfish, with fish up to 14 pounds each. There is a lot of bait in the river now. The perch are still biting in the creeks and have even ventured into the rivers now that the blues are gone.

Inland waters

Ponds should be red hot for crappie now and bass will take large minnows too. Fish slower and go a bit deeper except on warm days when the fish may head for the shallows to find food.
Starting Nov. 1, the pond in Fredericksburg opened to trout anglers for stocked fish.

Saltwater

Captain Ryan Rogers of The Midnight Sun charters, (804) 453-5812, reported that the fishing remains very good despite the wet and windy weather. He has caught some very nice rockfish and the birds are showing up too. As far press time he had Saturday, Nov. 7 open. See his Web site and give him a call to get on board. Give him a shout. (804) 580-0245. Visit www.fishmidnightsun.com to see the pics. He has some winter dates available at Virginia Beach for the monster rockfish.

Hunting

Deer are becoming more active so be careful driving down our local roads! Muzzleloader season is in. Some smaller bucks were taken and a few does. Pern’s had one 6 point and a few spikes taken. Your outdoor columnist has seen a lot of spikes and forkhorns running around. The turkey were cruising field edges a lot on Saturday during that rain.
