This week (following our press time) the newly constituted memberships of both the King George Board of Supervisors and the School Board will hold separate meetings on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

In addition to setting meeting schedules for the year, and electing chairmen and vice chairmen, both boards are also expected to set additional meeting dates to tackle finances in the still uncertain economy.

Supervisors are slated this week to review the budget for the remainder of the current 2011-12 fiscal year and

decide if the county can go forward with 2 percent raises for all employees.

That board is also expected to set dates for several meetings to deliberate on a budget proposal for the upcoming 2012-13 fiscal year, which begins in July.

The School Board will likewise set some dates. With three new members and no finance reports provided in the last calendar by former Superintendent Candace Brown, it has to get a handle on lower revenues than anticipated for the current 2011-12 fiscal year due to lower enrollments than expected. Unlike Supervisors, the School Board’s meeting agenda does not indicate it will discuss whether the division can afford to go forward with its proposed 2-percent pay raises slated for the end of January.

But the School Board will have longer to finalize its budget request for 2012-13. It had asked for and received a later submission date from county administrator Travis Quesenberry and deputy county administrator Donita Harper.
The new submission date was moved from Feb. 10 to March 2.

Supervisors will convene with Ruby Brabo replacing James Mullen as the Dahlgren member of the board. She will join reelected Joe Grzeika and Dale Sisson, along with Cedell Brooks and John LoBuglio on the new board.

The School Board will convene with Kristin Tolliver, Ken Novell and John Davis, replacing Renee Parker, Dennis Paulsen and Lynn Pardee. The new members will join Mike Rose and Rick Randall to make up a newly constituted School Board. And Stanley Jones is replacing Brown as interim superintendent.
