Proposed tower would deliver stronger signal

A new Verizon Wireless communications tower will be the subject of next month’s public hearings when the Westmoreland Planning Commission meets at 1:30 p.m. next Wednesday and the Supervisors conduct their land use business at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 10. Both sessions will be held in A.T. Johnson auditorium.

Verizon Wireless is still in the process of installing its infrastructure in the service challenged jurisdiction whose low lying waterfront areas are difficult to reach. Weak signals in areas where service has already been made commercially available results in operational limitations, despite the infrastructure that already is in place.

Rumors of bomb threat explode

Citizens in Westmoreland shores were a little riled last Wednesday when Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Colonial Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, Westmoreland Sheriff's deputies and the Dahlgren Department of Defense Bomb Squad showed up in their neighborhood.

Rumors quickly surfaced that a bomb threat was occurring on Holly Vista Drive even hours after the actual incident was over.

On August 22, Westmorleland Sheriff’s dispatch received a call from a citizen in the 1200 block of Holly Vista Drive reporting what could have been an explosive device.

Supervisors seek disaster relief for farmers

The Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors met last Monday evening with Extension Agent Stephanie Romelczyk and the brief exchange resulted in adoption of a resolution that asks Virginia’s governor to designate the jurisdiction as a drought disaster area.

The Aug. 13 action had been in the works for nearly a month, as rainfall data and estimates of crop damage were gathered and evaluated. Romelczyk told the Supervisors that rainfall is nearly eight inches below normal and the outlook for the county’s farmers is becoming increasingly dire.

English Building’s General District Court Room. County Administration advised The Journal of the change in that meeting’s location on Aug. 16, two days after the previous edition of this paper went to press.

Judicial center project rests with Wmd IDA

The public hearing that Westmoreland Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will convene at 6 p.m. next Monday evening in old A.T. Johnson auditorium is the last chance residents have to express their sentiments concerning the 40-year debt service obligation and nearly $16,000,000 cost associated with the county’s proposed judicial center project.

Grant will fund Monroe Birthplace improvements

County Administrator Norm Risavi received notice one week ago confirming the Commonwealth Transportation Board’s June 20 decision to award $371,000 in federal Transportation Enhancement Program funds to Westmoreland County. The monies will be used to create a timeline interpretive trail on the James Monroe Birthplace property.

The Journal successfully reached Monroe Foundation President Bill Thomas after learning that the funding was approved. Thomas spoke enthusiastically about the latest site development project and prior efforts that include development of a visitor center that is open to the public each summer on Saturdays and Sundays.

“We were delighted to learn of the grant announcement which will help to add value to the natural and historical aspects of the James Monroe Birthplace Park,” Thomas commented. He issued a challenge to those present on Monroe’s birthday earlier this year “to do all they can to enhance Monroe’s legacy in the coming year.”

W’md courthouse can be built without a tax hike

Westmoreland’s new court house project became more appealing when local officials and their public learned this Monday evening that the proposed construction project can go forward without a need to increase county tax rates.

The Board of Supervisors and Industrial Development Authority (IDA) met in joint session on July 30 to review contractor bids proposals and entertain the anticipated project’s financing options. Assuming the role of administrative agent, the IDA will reconvene at 6 p.m. on Aug. 20 in A.T. Johnson auditorium to conduct a public hearing and deliver a vote accepting or rejecting the 40-year loan the federal government has made available to finance the construction project.
