Sewer customers want to retain their septic systems

Following an advertised public hearing on Nov. 5, the Westmoreland County Planning Commission delivered a 4-0 vote that asks the board of supervisors to amend the zoning ordinance in order to allow new public sewer customers to maintain their septic systems after connecting to the county’s public waste water collection lines.

Board amends zoning to expedite sewer project

Too little interest was generated when members of county government offered to make sewage collection services available to Westmoreland residents in Drum Bay, Tidwells and Glebe Harbor neighborhoods. On Sept. 21, the county advised prospective service area customers that the deadline for purchasing the system’s $3,000 connections would be extended to Nov. 16, resulting in a 60-day extension of the initially stated target date. Failure to purchase a connection by the that date would result in a connection cost of $4,800.

The saga of CrackerJacks’ search for a home for its fireworks event

Editor’s Note: If you have been following The Journal either on our web site (www.journalpress.com) or our Facebook site (The Journal Press, Inc.) you could have read about the saga of the CrckerJacks Fire Works Club’s request to hold an event in Westmoreland. Fortunately, things seem to be settled, but here is the news as it unfolded, written by reporter Betsy Ficklin and Colonial Beach Councilman Tim Curtin.

CrackerJacks Fireworks Club will not be holding its three-day fireworks and gun shooting event next week on the Colonial Beach Dragway property. Residential neighbors on Longfield Road and members of the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors agreed during the Board’s October 10 meeting that so much noise over an extended period would not be acceptable.

W&L now has accredited designation

The State Board of Education released its annual accreditation report and the cloud that hovered over Westmoreland County’s Washington and Lee High School once year ago is but a memory. Gone in the updated State Board of Education assessment is the county high school’s past year’s provisional accreditation rating.

Westmoreland schools have returned to the ranks of the 93 percentile range complying with Standards of Learning criteria. As reported in these pages one year ago, the federal government’s No Child Left Behind/Standards of Learning protocols mandated a continued raising of the bar in matters of testing metrics and types of diplomas awarded to a school division’s graduates.

Westmoreland Supervisors ‘no’ CrackerJacks Fireworks Club request for Colonial Beach

CrackerJacks Fireworks Club will not be holding its three-day fireworks and gun shooting event next week on the Colonial Beach Dragway property. Residential neighbors on Longfield Road and members of the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors agreed during the Board's October 10 meeting that so much noise over an extended period would not be acceptable.

CrackerJacks Fireworks Club was represented by Daniel Clark during the Wednesday night proceeding in A.T. Johnson auditorium. Clark said he advised Westmoreland's local government authorities of the club's intentions during the first weeks of August and was advised of the jurisdiction's fireworks permitting regulations. He said the dragstrip was selected as the event location "because it's noisy place already."
