W&L cross-country set to host Pope’s Creek 5K

The Washington & Lee High School cross country team will host a 5K race at George Washington’s Birthplace National Monument on Sunday, April 21. Coach Cole Vanover said a one mile kid’s race will also be held as a part of the event.
“About two years ago, I approached the juniors on my cross country team and told them they were required to do some type of community event,” Vanover said.

It may actually be winter for a few more weeks, but spring sports are getting underway at Washington and Lee High School in Montross and the student athletes playing soccer, baseball, softball, and track and field are eager to get started.

Beddoo leads the way for the W&L Eagles

Washington & Lee sophomore and rising star Kathryn Beddoo sure knows how to lead. Her first two races have resulted in two wins, by a large margin. Beddoo, the reigning Northern Neck District (NND) Champion looks poised for another great year. Last Wednesday, on her home course she blew away the field and won by nearly a minute. The race was a “Pre-Season NND Championship” meet. The NND championship meet will be held again at Washington & Lee on Oct. 24.
Washington & Lee Eagle Fall sports are on the rise

It’s that time of year already! Washington & Lee coaches are gearing up for the Fall Sports season. Last fall, the Eagles captured four district titles in the Northern Neck District (boys cross country, girls cross country, drama, & football), as well as a Regional Title (drama) and Regional Runner-up title (girls cross country). Prospective Athletes, remember to get your physicals, now! The activity bus will start running on July 30th, the bus drops off at W&L at 5:30 p.m. and picks up from W&L at 9:15 p.m. Fans, parents, and relatives also be on the look out for Eagle Gold Cards!
Cheerleading

Pushing the Eagle envelope of success

He is a man on a mission to build a stronger foundation for the sports programs at Washington & Lee High School. Cole Vanover is confident that his recent promotion to assistant athletic director will be another step towards making the Eagles more competitive. The 2005 graduate replaced Michael Clark as the new assistant athletic director in July.
Thinking outside the box, Vanover’s approach to providing better facilities is simple, and in some respects, cutting edge. “Our county is at a disadvantage because of having two school systems, so funding isn’t exactly up to par,” Vanover said.
