Last Tuesday, at King George High School, during a battle of Battlefield District rivals, the Foxes boys’ junior varsity basketball team (5-3) overcame a close showdown by defeating the Chancellor Chargers (4-3), 50-45.
The victory featured four quarters of non-stop physical basketball. From the moment of the tip-off, the war was on. The Foxes led by forward Jelcoby White with three opening points, had the Chargers breathing down their necks in the latter part of the quarter, as Javan Graves delivered a jumper to tie the game at 8-8. However, Foxes guard Deante Peyton scored a lay-up to close the quarter with a Fox lead 10-8.
In the second quarter, the game entered a defense-oriented phase, as the Foxes struggled to penetrate the Charger post. As a result of the sudden change of tempo, the Chargers tied the game on two occasions before White closed out the quarter with two free throws, giving the Foxes a 21-18 lead.
After making adjustments on offense, which created passing lanes inside the Charger press defense, the Foxes extended their lead to 26-18. Qu’Shawn Allen scored five points in the quarter to lead King George on a 17-9 run.
Refusing to throw in the towel, the Chargers pushed the Foxes to the limit in the final quarter. Within the first five and a half minutes, Charger forward Jaire Perry disrupted the Fox offense with numerous deflections and steals. Although he kept the Chargers within striking distance, he eventually fouled out with a minute and 20 seconds left in the game.
While the Foxes scoring stopped with a free throw made by Allen with 1:11 left in the quarter, the Chargers hustled to cut the Fox lead to 50-45. The Chargers’ final charge proved to be futile as time ran out.
Late score. On Thursday, the Foxes junior varsity lost to Eastern View in overtime, 51-46.
The Foxes return next week, Dec. 28-29, as they host their annual holiday basketball tournament. Please check their website http://www.battlefielddistrictva.org/g5-bin/client.cgi for start time.
