Drifters receive Championship Rings
Memories of the greatest season in Drifter history were celebrated at a landmark located off the beaten path in the town known for Champions.
On Saturday night, at the Riverboat on the Potomac restaurant, in Colonial Beach, the 2008-2009 varsity Drifters boys’ basketball team took their final bows to an historic season. In front of a packed venue, the team received their State Championship rings. Over 300 loyal Drifters fans celebrated the historic event.
Held in the upstairs banquet room, overlooking the Potomac, the ring banquet was sponsored by the town’s chamber of commerce. Drifter fans were treated with a meet the players and coaches social hour with hor d’oeuvres and sodas. Fans also had an opportunity to enter a 50-50 raffle where they could win autographed Drifter basketballs. Also, Drifter legend TT Carey’s basketball jersey was auctioned off, while over 150 pieces of Drifter memorabilia and merchandise, including T-shirts and sweatshirts were sold.
Master of ceremonies, Ken Chatham presided over the spectacular event. Other dignitaries that were present included: Colonial Beach High School School Board Chairman Tim Trivett; Colonial Beach High School Athletic Director Jeremy Jack. The guest speaker for the evening was YMCA CEO Barney Reilly. Reilly electrified the audience with a captivating speech, while Drifter boys’ varsity basketball Head Coach Steve Swope recapped the championship season highlights—and presented his basketball team with rings.
Ring recipients included: Colonial Beach Elementary School Principal Kevin Newman; former Drifter Athletic Director Wayne Kennedy; Scorekeepers – Joyce Robey, Lauren Wilson; Statisticians – Josh Thomas, Kamron Smith; Managers – Jarrod Flores, Billy Sanford, Kurt Smith; Coaches – Casey Johnson, Randy Jones, Jonathan Parker; Players – Alex Gorfida, Joe Slater, Paul Roberson, Ken Devers, Jeryl Dickerson, Thomas Peery, Jamel Dickerson, Kevin Swope, Dylan Farinet, Tristan “TT” Carey; Head Coach – Steve Swope.
The Drifter basketball program would like to thank the dedicated volunteers who helped make the event a huge success. In addition, the program is forever thankful to Mr. Carey Geddes an Mrs. Penny Flanagan, and her Riverboat staff for all of their diligent and generous contributions that made the event a night to remember.
