Robert James Goodman
Robert James “Benny” Goodman, 80, of Montross died Saturday, July 10, 2010, of lung cancer.
He was orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandmother. Benny entered the Merchant Marines in 1943 at the age of 15, and he was proud to be an active service member traveling the world and serving his country. In 1957, he left the Marines and settled into a career in hotel and restaurant services in Washington, D.C.
Benny was a member of American Legion Post 85 in Arlington, where he was on the house and executive committees.
Benny was a loving husband, father and grandparent. He is survived by Faye Halleck, Kathy, Becky, Paul, Peter, Blaine, Ruth and grandchildren Carla, Matthew, Sarah, Rachael, Wesley, Preston, Mandy and Jake.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 17, at the Montross Chapel of Welch Funeral Home.

Mary Magaline Filmore
Mary Magaline Filmore, 97, known as “Maggie,” was born Nov. 22, 1912, to the late Charles and Blanche Davis. On Sunday, July 11, Maggie exchanged her arms for a pair of platinum wings after a short illness.
Her husband Daniel Filmore and her son, Purcell Filmore, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Thomas “Tommy” Davis and James “Pluck” Davis.
Maggie leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, who worked so diligently taking care of her for over 40 years, Dorothy, known as “Peggy,” and her son-in-law, Mark Grant of Dahlgren, and her daughter Irene Fisher of Camden, N.J.
She also is survived by her sisters, Rosie Robinson of Staunton, Alice Pryor of Mitchellsville, MD, Addell Bland and Ida Bertha Hodge, both of King George, VA, and Mary Ann Daniels (Kenneth) of Riverdale, MD. Sister Sadie Bland preceded her in death.
She also leaves behind her brothers Benjamin Beverly (Ruth) of Billings, MT, and Eugene Beverly of Seattle, WA., and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She had two very special friends, the late Ernest “Crack” Tyler and Helen Newman, who stuck by Maggie to the end of her journey. Their friendship stood the test of time. She affectionately referred to Helen as her girlfriend.
A funeral was held at Little Ark Baptist Church, Dahlgren, VA. The Rev. William L. McKinley officiated and the Eulogist was the Rev. Matthew “Viola” Bumbry. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Services were provided by Lee Funeral Home, King George, VA.
Bessie S. Vann
Bessie S. Vann, 94, of Parkersburg, WV., formerly of Colonial Beach, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010, in Parkersburg.
Bessie is survived by a daughter, Phyllis J. Iroff of Parkersburg; a son, Ronald E. Vann of Alexandria; one grandson; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Charlie E. Vann, and one granddaughter.
A funeral was held Saturday, July 17, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. James Spurgeon officiating. Interment followed Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens.

Nettie Frank, 84, of King George County passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Pete and Elsie Balderson, John Balderson, Joyce Heiden, Janice and Dickie Whetzel, John Madison and Donna Greenwood; nine grandchildren, Theresa Balderson, Crystal Berryman, Betty Jo Conner, Juanita Beale, Mike Simms, Cheryl Simms, April Greenwood, Jason Greenwood and Johnnie Madison; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Frankie Balderson.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. Johnny Almond officiating. Burial will follow in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens.

Francis Alexander Farmer
Francis Alexander Farmer, 86, of Fredericksburg passed away peacefully on Friday, July 16, 2010, at Golden Living of Fredericksburg.
Mr. Farmer was a World War II Army veteran and a member of VFW Post 3103.
Survivors include his wife, Virgie Farmer of Fredericksburg; his brother, Lloyd Farmer Jr. and wife Louise of King George, VA; brothers-in-law, Kelly and Aubrey Green of King George; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great- nephews.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 20, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. R. Kenneth Brooks officiating. Interment will be at a later date.
