Bernice C. Roth, 81 of Neligh, formerly of Elgin, NE, passed away Friday, June 14, 2013 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, NE.
The daughter of Ludwig and Martha (Kallhoff) Koenig, she was born November 16, 1931 on the family ranch
home southwest of Ewing, NE.
She attended Holt County rural School District #146 through the eighth grade and graduated in 1949 from St. Mary’s High School in O’Neill, NE with Normal Training.
She taught school for three years before working for Hested’s Store in Norfolk, NE for three years.
On September 1, 1955, Bernice married Jerome Bruno Roth at rural St. John’s Church near Clearwater, NE.
The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Elgin where Bernice was a homemaker and raised their four children: Kathy, Janis, Lori and Mary Beth.
She was a member of St. Boniface Church, St. Boniface Christian Mothers and served as Treasurer and circle leader. She was also a member of a prayer group.
Bernice enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and challenging herself with Sudoku and other word puzzles.
She is survived by four daughters and their families: Kathy McPhillips (Dan) of Lindsay, NE and their children Tammy Kaufman (Luke), Julie, Karla, Michelle and Laura McPhillips; Jan Starman (Rick) of Petersburg, NE and their children Adam, Amanda and Juliann Starman; Lori Beckman (Gary) of Elgin, NE and their children Andy, Makayla and Erin Beckman; Mary Beth Hankla (Brian) of King George, VA and their children Jacob and Bethany Hankla; three great-grandchildren: Owen, Oliver and Lucy Kaufman of Meadow Grove, NE: one sister MaryAnn Thiele of Clearwater, NE; two brothers: Jim Koenig of Ewing and Bob Koenig (Florence) of Lincoln.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerome in 2011, and one sister Kathryn Sojka.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, June 19 at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, NE with Rev. Ross Burkhalter officiating.
Interment followed in the parish cemetery.
