School Board mulling use of former KGMS building

The School Board is once again considering future uses for the former middle school building.
That topic came up at last week’s meeting on Feb. 25, while the School Board was discussing a proposed Capital Improvements Program (CIP) request to the county totaling $8.1 million that is expected to be finalized at next week’s meeting on March 11. The proposal contains 15 projects.
The former middle school building was ceremoniously closed for student use in June 2009. That took place after the completion and opening of a new 1,700-pupil high school earlier that year, built at a cost of over $42 million.
School budget hearing draws 10 comments

Ten people showed up to speak at this week’s public hearing by the King George School Board on its proposed budget request. The hearing was held on Feb. 18 with about 25 people attending.
Half of those speaking were in favor of more money for teachers and other instructional personnel, along with some questions on other budget matters. The other half were pushing for more money for needs at Potomac Elementary, one of the three county elementary schools.
School Board asked for two new central office positions

The King George School Board received a request last week for two new central office positions proposed to be added to the 2013-14 budget request by Superintendent Rob Benson.
The request was made at the School Board budget meeting on Jan. 30 when Benson also provided clarifications and corrections to his original budget request for next fiscal year, which begins on July 1.
The positions would add a Community Relations Specialist and a Grants Technician, with both positions reporting directly to Benson.
Benson distributed proposed position descriptions that indicated a salary range for each of $36,000 - $50,000. Additional costs for the positions would include the usual benefits for full-time positions, including those for health insurance, retirement and payroll taxes.
The positions are expected to be noted in a budget request presentation to the Board of Supervisors this week on Wednesday, Feb. 6, during a joint meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
At that time, division officials will preview its preliminary operating budget request of $36,963,780 for 2013-14.

The King George School Board will take another look at wording contained in School Board policy BDB-Special School Board Meetings. That is expected to take place next week at its regular meeting scheduled for Jan. 28.

Good Morning Everyone,
First, we are all coping with the terrible events of last Friday and I know our thoughts and prayers are with the entire community of Sandy Hook. Please know that in response to the Sandy Hook tragedy, Sheriff Dempsey and many of his deputies will be providing an increased presence in and near all of our schools this week. Their presence is not meant to alarm but rather to reassure all of us as we do our best to maintain a safe and productive week of learning for our students. In addition to our cooperation with the Sheriff’s office, our schools are reviewing their security and safety procedures to include frequent walks around the school.
School Board fine-tuning evaluation for Superintendent

The King George School Board has spent portions of its last several meetings in selecting and then tweaking a new evaluation instrument to be used beginning this year to formally communicate its satisfaction with new Superintendent Rob Benson’s performance.
Benson was hired earlier this year, and took over the position effective July 1.
Benson has said he wanted clear direction on the School Board’s expectations for his performance. In fact, the refining of an evaluation tool has been a collaborative process between all members of the School Board and with Benson.
