The King George Board of Supervisors tentatively agreed this week not to raise any taxes for the upcoming fiscal year’s 2013-14 budget. That came at a budget work session on Monday, March 18.

Editor’s Note: The Journal publishes, with sadness, this story by our dear friend, DeLaura Padovan, manager of the King George Farmers’ Market announcing her resignation. We all in King George and the surrounding area will miss the great work she did week after week to bring the market to the county. She always had the ideas, attracted a large cadre of volunteers to the market and made life better for us all. We will all miss her, The Journal will miss her, and we will try to carry on as she moves on with her life.
Hello Friends of King George Farmers Market,
Just as in fields and garden beds around the county, things are growing and changing at KGFM as we gear up for our fifth season.
With many emotions, this market manager stepped down from her duties with KGFM at the end of March to attend to a myriad of other projects clamoring for her attention.
The 2013 Market Board of Directors, comprised of President Jane Van Valzah, Vice President Lana Atwell, Treasurer Tammi Shelton, Secretary Kim Reynolds, Alexander Strugatsky, Bill Robie, and Agostinho Caldeira, aided by our fantastic cadre of market volunteers, will operate the market until a new manager is found.
The market will also welcome its first-ever Market Management Intern for the summer. King George native and 4-H All Star Aldyn Abell will begin the internship when she returns home from Virginia Tech at the end of the semester.
What an exciting and wonderful journey we have all shared for the past four years! From its inception in 2009, our tiny market has set itself apart from its peers through its friendliness and remarkable community spirit. Blazing to glory in 2010 as one of four national winners in America’s Favorite Farmers Market contest, we have shared so much joy as a community.
The market’s monthly Community Days included more than 30 local civic and municipal organizations last year — weaving together a tremendous web of information, resources and support for the 15,000–plus shoppers who came to the market in 2012.
Vegucation Station offered shoppers a bounty of fresh food “how-to” wisdom and the market’s “Fields to Table” Cookbook, and canning and other classes kept the wise ways of our old-timers alive and well.
Our $10 for 10 Weeks shoppers’ incentive and annual Feast in the Field gave farmers and community members the opportunity to socialize outside of the market and strengthened our growing community even more.
Our SNAP/EBT (food stamps) and credit card token programs have brought scores of new shoppers to the market — including many low-income families who might otherwise never have been able to purchase our fantastic offerings of fruit and vegetables. In 2012, this essential program generated over $15,400 in new revenue for our farmers, more than doubling our 2011 token sales.
King George’s brand new Farm-to-School event last fall proved so successful that Virginia Farm Bureau recently ran a news piece about it on the “Real Virginia” show on cable TV. Check it out online: vafarmbureau.org/NewsVideo/RealVirginia.aspx.
Farm-to-School 2013 promises to bring even more fresh, locally grown produce into all five school cafeterias.

Two men injured in shooting at China Garden

The King George Sheriff’s office is seeking two men in connection with shootings that occurred late Saturday when a private party at the China Garden Restaurant in Dahlgren turned into a melee than spilled out into the parking lot. Shots were fired outside and two men were injured.
“I thought it was fireworks at first,” said Jay Thomas, a Dahlgren man who lives near the restaurant. “Then I heard a repetitive bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.”

The Potomac Drummers, led by teacher Mr. Elmore, beat out a rhythm at the fourth annual “Best of the Best” Basketball Showdown, held at King George High School on Feb. 28. The event is a fundraiser for KGHS PTSA and the proceeds go toward scholarships for graduating seniors. Each of the five county schools participated, along with an alumni team. The KG Steppers, the high school Drill Team, KGES band and KGHS Chorus also provided entertainment for the event.
