At a meeting on Feb. 5, Supervisors were told by Blue Ridge Mass Appraisal Field Supervisor Jonathan Larsen that at that point, 5,028 properties in the county had been visited, with about 7,900 left to go. He said this phase of the project is to make sure the physical data they have on each property is correct, such as number of bedrooms, bathrooms, size of garage, etc.
He noted that a reassessment map is being kept on the county website, which tracks the firm’s progress and notes the areas in which the reps are currently going door-to-door. The reassessment is for taxation purposes and will be completed by the end of the year, to go into effect Jan. 1, 2014.
PURCHASE OPTION FOR LAND
The Board of Supervisors approved a six-month purchase option for land adjacent to the King George Industrial Park last month at a meeting on Jan. 15 which cost $2,000. The purchase option gives the county the right to buy about 340 acres along Route 3 (Kings Hwy) from the Plentiful Farm Family Limited Partnership and the Mount View Family Limited Partnership at the greater of $10 million or $29,149 per acre. The county had entered into a similar agreement a few years ago when there were other prospects interested in large acreage at or near the industrial park.
At the Feb. 14 meeting of the Economic Development Authority, Nicole Thompson, director of Economic Development, said the purchase option had come about because of an interested business prospect that has since decided to focus on locations in Pennsylvania.
The Planning Commission and the Economic Development Authority (EDA) elected officers for the 2013 calendar year.
At a meeting last month on Jan. 8, the Planning Commission elected Tony Scaramozzi as chairman with Gary Kendrick as vice chairman. The other members of the Planning Commission are Josh Colwell, Chris Cox, Bill Eschmann, Karla Frank, Doily Fulcher, Jessica Herrink, Tara Patteson and Bill Robie. The Planning Commission meets on the second Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m. in the board room of the Revercomb administration building located behind the Courthouse on Route 3.
At a meeting on Feb. 14, the EDA reelected Glen Moore as chairman and elected Tony Zilic as vice chairman. The other members of the EDA are Rick Ballenger, Monika Philbrick, Ike Hughes, Jean Fraysse and newly appointed member, Dreda Newman. The EDA has monthly meetings scheduled for the second Thursdays of the month at 6 p.m. in the board room of the Revercomb administration building located behind the Courthouse on Route 3.
Two former members of the EDA were honored for their service by EDA chairman Glen Moore and the Board of Supervisors at a meeting on Feb. 5. Long-time member Terry Moore was honored for his service from May 2004 through the end of 2012. Dick Kelly was thanked for his service from February 2011 through the end of 2012.
At the board meeting on Feb. 5, Supervisor chairman Dale Sisson recognized member Cedell Brooks for his service as 2012 chairman. Brooks was presented with his fourth gavel to commemorate his fourth time serving as chairman.
BRABO COSTS FOR NATIONAL CONFERENCE APPROVED
Ruby Brabo received approval by the Board of Supervisors for the county to pay her conference registration and hotel costs for her attendance at the National Association of Counties (NACo) conference in March in Washington, D.C. The registration cost is $540. Her hotel costs were unspecified, but she said she would share a room with a woman from Westmoreland. Last year, her hotel cost of $1,118.93 was paid by the county.
