Davis elected School Board’s 2013 chairman

John Davis was elected as chairman of the King George School Board for 2013.
The short organizational meeting where the action took place was last week on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Kristin Tolliver was voted vice chairman, with both elected unanimously.
Davis is beginning the second year of his current four-year term representing the At-Large election district. He previously served two terms, from 2000-2007, representing the Dahlgren District.
Tolliver is also starting the second year of her first term, representing the James Madison district. Ken Novell is likewise beginning the second year of his first term representing the Dahlgren District.
Mike Rose, who was chairman during 2012, and Rick Randall are beginning the last year of their first terms, with elections slated for those seats in Shiloh and James Monroe in November.
MEETING CALENDAR
The School Board also set its meeting calendar at its organizational meeting, with agreement to continue to hold meetings most months on the second and fourth Mondays, beginning at 6 p.m.
But there are several changes to that schedule.
The 2013 meetings for the year are listed below. Unless noted below, the meetings will take place in the board room on the ground floor of the Revercomb Administration building (behind the Courthouse on Route 3 – Kings Hwy).
JANUARY Two more meetings will take place, with one at 6 p.m. begin on Jan. 14 that is to include a presentation from the King George Education Association (KGEA) to reveal its requests for the upcoming budget deliberations.
A second business meeting will be held on Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at the School Board office, located on St. Anthony’s Loop Road.
FEBRUARY A budget meeting is scheduled for Feb. 11 at 4 p.m., followed by a regular business meeting starting at 6 p.m.
On Feb. 18, a public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on a proposed budget request at the School Board office.
On Feb. 25, a budget meeting is scheduled at 4 p.m., to be followed by a regular business meeting at 6:00 p.m.
MARCH Meetings are scheduled on March 11 and 25 at 6 p.m.
APRIL Meetings are scheduled on April 8 and 22 at 6 p.m.
MAY Meetings are scheduled on May 13 at 6 p.m. and on Wednesday, May 29 at 6 p.m.
JUNE Meetings are scheduled on June 10 and 24 at 6 p.m.
JULY Only one meeting is scheduled, on July 15 at 4 p.m., which is a work session to develop Capital Improvements Program requests to go to the county later this fiscal year.
AUGUST Meetings are scheduled on Aug.12 and 26 at 6 p.m.
SEPTEMBER Meetings are scheduled on Sept. 9 and 23 at 6 p.m.
OCTOBER A meeting is scheduled on Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at the School Board office and on Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.
NOVEMBER Only one meeting is scheduled, on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.
DECEMBER Only one meeting is scheduled, on Dec. 9 at 6 p.m.
JANUARY 2014 The organizational meeting for 2014 is scheduled on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m. at the School Board office.
Additional special meetings may be added, with a legal requirement for a minimum of three days notice to be provided to the public, with those requesting notice to be provided it at the same time that members of the School Board are notified.
Regular meetings of the School Board are usually taped for rebroadcast on local cable TV channel 8. The rebroadcasts are scheduled at 8 p.m. and midnight on Mondays and Wednesdays.
SCHOOL BOARD ASSIGNMENTS
At its first meeting of the New Year, the School Board also appointed members to various positions, boards and committees, including the following:
Virginia School Boards Association – John Davis as delegate to the annual convention in November, with Mike Rose as alternate.
Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School – Rick Randall as representative, with Ken Novell as alternate.
Commonwealth Governor’s School – Ken Novell, with Kristin Tolliver as alternate.
Technology Advisory Committee – Mike Rose.
CTE Advisory Committee – Ken Novell.
Gifted/Talented Advisory Committee – Mike Rose.
Special Education Advisory Committee – Kristin Tolliver.
Health Advisory Committee – John Davis.
Title I Advisory Committee – Rick Randall.
Code of Conduct Advisory Committee – John Davis.
In addition, employees were appointed to various duty positions, including Sheryl Bushrod reappointed as Clerk, with Superintendent Rob Benson appointed Agent and Deputy Clerk, Wilma Ward appointed Deputy Agent and Bill Wishard appointed as Superintendent’s Designee.
