The veteran I interviewed was my brother Frankie. I don’t get to see him as much as I would like to so that’s why I chose him.
He joined the military because he wanted to go to school, have a career with job security. His rank was Corporal in the Marines. A corporal is usually a fire team leader or second-in-command of a squad of Marines. He served from Sep. 11, 2004 - Feb. 8, 2008. His favorite experience was going through the Crucible in boot camp because he led his fire team in record time.
His favorite duty station was Camp Lejeune, in North Carolina where his son was born. This is also where he met his best friend, Mitch.
He thought the best thing about his service was teaching a class of eighty people, advanced martial arts. Four out of the eighty people became Force Recons, and two of them rescued a person from being held hostage. He also said if he told young people about the military he would say that if they wanted a challenge, and wanted to push their body further to join and excel for their country. I asked him if he would ever enlist or become an officer all over again. He told me he would but, they wouldn’t take him because of medical reasons. He hurt his leg while in the military. He told me that he had the best times in the military. He met his best friends and got to experience all of this.
He also got a tattoo, on his chest that says “Born to fight, train to kill, ready to die but never will.”
