In 1989 my dad enlisted in the United States Navy and has been on active duty ever since. My family, including my two sisters, myself and my mom are very proud of my dad being in the Navy. He has been in the Navy for almost 20 years now. He stared out as an enlisted Seaman and has worked his way up to Commander. The Navy paid for him to get a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree. We travel almost everywhere the Navy sends him.
My dad has been in two wars including the Persian Gulf War before I was born and also the Iraq War. He was recently in Afghanistan before we moved to Virginia. He worked on constructing a tent camp and combat hospital with the Marines in Afghanistan. My dad liked working with the troops and trying to make it a better place for the people to live and get care. We are currently living in Virginia and he has recently been promoted to the rank of Commander after serving over 20 years in the service.
My dad has been sent to a lot of different duty stations including Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, Washington, Illinois, California, Tennessee and now Virginia. The reason why he wanted to join the Navy was to get out of the state of Michigan and see the world. He has gained a lot of education along the way and has met a lot of people too. He feels he has done his part in supporting his country and helping to maintain our American freedom.
My father would tell young people to give the Navy a shot. You grow up quick and learn to work as a team. The Navy has made my dad the man he is today and I am very proud to call him my father and my hero!
