To the Editor:
Ten years ago this past week, on March 20, 2003, the United States invaded Iraq. The war officially ended on Dec. 15, 2011 — eight years, eight months, three weeks and four days later — when the last American forces withdrew. In the days between, hundreds of thousands of lives were altered irrevocably by death, injury, both mental and physically, not to mention the debt now estimated to be $1.5 trillion and rising.
Now, the same constituencies are starting to beat the drums for a renewed war in the Middle East; starting with saving Syria and while we are there, a push into Iran to get the nukes, if any. The same uber war dogs, Senators Graham and McCain; neo-cons. Cheney, Pearl, Wolfowitz, Will, Krauthammer and the Fox personalities are starting the push towards war.
They are again quoting dubious Israeli-based INTEL, a chemical weapons attack in Syria which nobody seems able to confirm. They are trying again, to drag us to war with the pressing need to introduce democracy in the Middle East based on the bizarre assumption they want to be like us.
It’s obvious these eggheads think we Americans learned nothing from the debacle of Iraq and our political incompetence in Afghanistan.
This argument doesn’t speak against our troops and their horrible sacrifices but to the inept politicians and pundits who are responsible.
These elites refuse to recognize we fought the wrong war and accomplished nothing other than further ratcheting up Muslim radicals’ hatred and reinforced their recruitment tools, opened wider the Saudi jihadist checkbook, and provided a convenient thesis for dictators and theocrats to exploit.
We went into Iraq based on politically altered intelligence claiming a great danger from Iraq’s fictitious weapons of mass destruction. The world’s real threat was a nuclear armed and delivery capable self-declared Wahhabi Islamic state a hundreds of miles east, Pakistan. A country speaking out of both sides its mouth concerning Afghanistan while stuffing their pockets with our tax dollars, a country using state sponsored terrorism against our troops and India. A country providing the bulk of ideological and military training for jihadists as Pakistan seeks to be new Caliph.
The politicians, pundits and the right wing media’s outlets are starting the drum beat to be brave and patriotic, to plant your lawn posters, raise your flags and renew your troop supporting bumper stickers. Thus confirming your red-blooded Americanism. They are crying out to degrade those who speak against another Middle East debacle and of course to only “Eat Freedom Fries”. We have been through this once; we know the outcome and let us not be swayed down the same road.
