Snow, ice and rain delays paving of new bridge deck
FREDERICKSBURG— A combination of this week’s snow, ice and rain has delayed the final phase of work on the Route 205 bridge rehabilitation in Westmoreland County.
The bridge, which has been closed since early November 2012, was expected to reopen to traffic on Friday, March 8, however this week’s winter storm has caused a one week delay. Crews were scheduled to pave the bridge deck this week and open the bridge to traffic. Although conditions have improved, it has been determined that it remains too wet to place the final layer of asphalt on the bridge. VDOT construction officials indicate that paving under these conditions could lead to future pavement break-up and potentially cause an additional closing of the bridge.
Forecasters predict that the next few days will be dry and mild, which are ideal conditions for paving.
VDOT anticipates that the bridge will be open to traffic by Friday, March 15.
