A 62 year old man was pronounced dead shortly after being struck by a vehicle while standing next to his car in the parking lot of the Beachgate Hotel located at 800 Colonial Avenue in Colonial Beach on the morning of Dec. 19.
Colonial Beach Police Chief, Kenneth Blevins Sr. reported in a press release that a 72 year old man appeared to have passed out due to a medical condition while operating his vehicle in the Town of Colonial Beach.
The driver was heading towards Colonial Avenue on Euclid Ave when his vehicle crossed Colonial Avenue and continued on into the parking lot of the Beachgate Hotel, striking the hotel's sign, then two parked cars and a pedestrian standing next to the second car.
Dispatch received the call at 9:04 a.m. and immediately dispatched police, fire and rescue.
The press release states, “After striking the hotel sign the vehicle struck two parked cars and several support rails before striking an outside wall of the hotel. The male victim, age 62 that was struck, had been visiting a relative for an extended period of time at the hotel. He was standing beside his vehicle, which was the second parked vehicle that was struck when the accident occurred.”
Colonial Beach Fire and Rescue arrived on scene within minutes and treated the victim before transporting him by helicopter to Mary Washington Hospital. The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
According to the press release, “Colonial Beach Fire Department officials requested assistance from Westmoreland County and Colonial Beach building officials to inspect the structure of the building before allowing residents to return to the damaged area.”
The driver of the vehicle was also transported to Mary Washington Hospital where he was treated and released.
The accident is still under investigation by the Colonial Beach Police Department at this time.
