Commissioners discuss safety of drinking water

During last month’s Planning Commission meeting some commissioners voiced opposition concerning implementing a Well-Head Protection Overlay District in Colonial Beach. To answer questions about the program, the commission requested Barry Matthews from the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Drinking Water, give a presentation during the March meeting.
CB Planners get to look at Eleanor Park future use

After hearing a wide variety of ideas, concerns and requests not to sell Eleanor Trailer Park the Colonial Beach Town Council moved to refer the matter to the Planning Commission for study, review and direction on what to do with the property.
The Colonial Beach Town Council had asked for open public comment concerning what to do with Eleanor Trailer Park located near the end of the point in Colonial Beach Virginia at the October Town Council meeting. During the meeting there were mixed comments from speakers but most seemed to have misunderstood the purpose of the meeting and assumed the council would vote directly after public comment on whether or not to sell the park even though a vote was not listed on the agenda.

Planning Commission reviews Article 7

Discussions concerning changes to Article 7 of the Building and Zoning Code sparked questions regarding the validity of the conditional use permit for The Potomac Renaissance Condos which are located at 100 Taylor St.
The subject came up at the September Colonial Beach Planning Commission meeting after Gary Mitchell, Director of Building and Zoning, presented changes to Article 7, Resort Commercial (RC) District, of the zoning ordinances. Mitchell requested the planning commission discuss the changes and approve advertising for a public hearing.
The Resort Commercial District is the section of land that is just inside of Boundry St. to Colonial Ave. and Washington Ave. to the Potomac River.

Capital Improvement Plan
The planning commission performed their annual review of the town’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and sent a favorable recommendation to the council.
The council will review the five-year plan totaling almost 23 million dollars for town improvements and another 35.7 million for the school system.

Colonial Beach awarded Safe Routes To School Grant

Good news just keeps coming in for Director of Building and Zoning, Gary Mitchell. In late January Mitchell got word that a $10,000 planning grant to study and prepare a redevelopment plan for town owned property was awarded by the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA).
But this news was overshadowed on Feb. 6 when the Virginia Department of Transportation awarded the town with a $482,053 grant to fund the Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Project.
The project will provide sidewalk installation and/or repair along Douglas Avenue, Wilder Avenue
