Water-main break sends rocks flying

A water-main sprung a leak when workers from Dominion Power were drilling into the street at the intersection of Hawthorne and Colonial Ave. Thursday morning in Colonial Beach to replace a telephone pole.
The water started to leak out bringing up sand and debris. As the water was forced out, the street began to cave in, eventually leaving a six to seven foot crack and a hole about five feet deep.
As the dirt and rocks were being washed away the pressure shot water out over 25 feet resulting in rocks being hurled through the front windows of the Riverview Inn.
Dominion officials are not commenting but town officials are saying that Dominion power was drilling into the road right over a marked water-main.
With July 1 just 10 days away, the town dodged another bullet. Town officials will take over road maintenance for the secondary streets in Colonial Beach — Hawthorne and Irving is on that list.
Public works will be responsible for repairing the water-main, VDOT will repair the road but there is no word yet on where the pole will be placed.
