Governor Bob McDonnell has announced that Virginia Tourism Corporation will award $660,000 in matching grants to 45 local tourism initiatives as part of the Virginia Tourism Corporation Marketing Leverage Grant Program, of which Colonial Beach will receive $2,500.
The tourism grant is provided through the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) Marketing Leverage Grant Program and is specifically designed to leverage limited marketing dollars, stimulate new marketing programs through the creation of tourism partnerships, to develop a research-based marketing program with strong measures of success, and to extend the “Virginia is for Lovers” campaign.
The Colonial Beach Business District Revitalization Management Team held a meeting on May 23 to discuss the progress of the town’s Community Development Block Grant application (CDBG) and two other grants the town is seeking, one of which was the Marketing Leverage Grant, to improve the business district in Colonial Beach.
The town plans to use the money from the Marketing Leverage Grant for funding to develop web based promotions for the town. Consideration of printed materials left the group divided but it was determined that web based promotions are more cost effective and can reach a broader audience.
Colonial Beach is an active participant in The Northern Neck Tourism Commission, who was also awarded $10,000 for the Northern Neck Heritage Area Marketing Program. Since Colonial Beach tourism committee has been working closely with the Northern Neck, Colonial Beach will surely benefit from this award as well.
In an email to The Journal, Town Manager Val Foulds said, “We received the unofficial word in late July, but we were asked not to make any public announcements until we received the press release template from the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC). To date we have not received the template, nor any other communication from VTC. I became aware of the “official” advance notification to the press this afternoon. Needless to say that I am thrilled that Colonial Beach is getting an award that will further our marketing efforts as we go from “special to great”, as one of our citizens describes this journey.”
