Doswell — Competitive horse and livestock shows and entertainment events featuring racing pigs and dock diving dogs attracted crowds at the State Fair.
And for many area residents flowers, quilts and paintings joined fowl, cows and dogs in garnering top prizes at the venues held at Meadow Event Park this year.
The King George 4-H Quilting Club took a blue ribbon for their 60x60 Autumn Whirlwind Blocks quilt with a tossed fall leaf background in the youth group project category.
Arts categories also brought top awards to King George residents John Hager for his silk floral arrangement and acrylic painting. And Michael Rodriquez took a blue ribbon for his colored pencil drawing in the youth K through 6 category.
Franklin Rinko of Dahlgren took a first place award in the youth baked goods specialty cakes novelty shape category.
Two cows were entered into competition by King George resident Chris Ohler and he took a third place ribbon with his red Angus calf Sapphire.
Fancy’s Friends 4-H Dog Club members and their pups walked away with the top four awards at the state 4-H Dog Show.
Junior Top Dog went to Katie Fedorchak and her boxer, Bunny with Emily Martin taking the Reserve Junior Top Dog award with her Japanese Chin, Chibi. Fedorchak also took top honors for achieving the highest score in Rally Obedience.
Senior Top Dog and Senior Top Dog Reserve went to Amber Garbee with her Australian shepherd, Roo, and Aldyn Abell with her English cocker spaniel, Alley, respectively.
Maddie Fedorchak took Junior Best First Year Handler with her collie, Marmee, and Sara Wengstrom took the top award for achieving the highest score in Obedience with her golden retriever, Mia.
This is the 24th year the club has participated in the state 4-H Dog Show and the club members garnered awards in every category.
Six members of the King George 4-H Livestock Cub participated in the Stockman’s competition. But despite their best efforts against a formidable field of several hundred competitors no one on the team took an award.
Students participating in competitions at the fair are also eligible to earn scholarships for their continued education.
Competition results can be found at the 2010 State Fair of Virginia website at www.StateFair.com/Competitions.
