Patawomeck Tribe seeks state recognition |
|
Last week, a bill for the state recognition of the
Patawomeck [Potomac] Indian Tribe has started making its way through the
Virginia General Assembly. I have
been asked to write about the history of the Patawomeck Tribe in our area and
the background efforts resulting in the birth of this bill. My name is William L. Deyo, known to
most as “Bill.” I have been the
tribal historian of the Patawomeck Tribe since its reorganization over a decade
ago.

Doctor finds a new home, practice in KG |
|
Dr. Nancy Wang, a board certified Family Physician, now located in the Gateway Medical Urgent Care Center offices on Journal Parkway in King George, is offering a new presence in the area.
While the Urgent Care Center is in full swing, providing immediate care for local residents, Dr. Wang is adding a new dimension of medical services to the community: your own physician in full time practice. She joins the other practices provided by King George Family Medical Center, Ltd, which owns King George Family Medicine and King George Pediatrics as well as the Gateway Medical Urgent Care Center.
Wang is no stranger to medical practice in the region, having worked in a family practice in Fredericksburg for the last 10 years. Now she begins her work in the local area and feels at home in the more rural community of King George and the Northern Neck.

Learn to share the road in South Africa |
|
Have you ever had to stop for a herd of elephants crossing the road? Recently, I had just that pleasure, and it was invigorating! My family and I traveled to South Africa in August where we went on safari for nine days and experienced the ultimate in wildlife viewing.
We spent the first several days in Kruger National
Park, the largest nature reserve in South Africa, which encompasses
nearly 2 million hectares of primal Africa. The well-funded park is
known as one of the world’s greatest for its diversity of large
mammals. A plethora of plant and animal species, including lions,
leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, giraffe,
zebras, and more, interact naturally within their vast protected,
fenceless borders. This park allows humans the opportunity to look upon
these natural wonders, with minimal disturbance of nature’s plan.

Aid for honey bees starts at home |
|
By Cindy Ross
My husband’s 24 fruit trees have been a joke. Their blossoms are pretty to look at in the spring. They offer good backdrops for pictures. Other than that, the trees have served no purpose. We’ve never gotten fruit, except for the one year a man who lived about a mile away kept bees. But then he got rid of them, and our fruit never came back.
Until our neighbor had bees, we rarely saw a honey bee pollinating the blossoms during the 20 years we’ve lived here.
