Outdoors Report
A day on the boat, reeling in freight trains

The salt air blew across my face as porpoises eased out of the water at the inlet near Rudee’s. Little did I know that less than a few hours later I would be horsing in a freight train on a reel the size of a bass-casting reel.
Our captain, Ryan Rogers, normally charters out of Smith Point, Va., but takes his boat down to Virginia Beach each June to put clients on tuna, amberjack, dolphin, spadefish and whatever else suits him. This trip I was invited on had a rendezvous with an aquatic freight train. I will never forget the trip as long as I live.
The crew included friends of Captain Rogers and his first mate, Kenny Nance. The group had fished with each other before and although I was the newcomer to half of them, they welcomed me as if I had

OUTDOOR REPORT - June 30, 2010

It is HOT out there, but the fishing is still very good early and late in the day.

Rappahannock River
Pern’s Supermarket (775-7817) reported lots of anglers buying bait such as shrimp, clam snouts, bloodworms and nightcrawlers. I used the shrimp from Pern’s to get some nice pan-sized croaker.
Smaller catfish are biting very well on cutbait and nightcrawlers. Bass are still reportedly hitting spinnerbaits and jigged plastics on woody structure in the river. Go shady and deep.

OUTDOOR REPORT - June 23, 2010

It is HOT out there, but the fishing is still very good. Fish early and late to beat the heat. Don’t forget sunscreen.

Rappahannock River
Pern’s Supermarket (540-775-7817) reported lots of anglers buying clam snouts and nightcrawlers. The smaller catfish are biting very well. If you need dinner try some bait from Pern’s and fish along the shoreline in 3-6 feet of water with a float. Bass seem to be hitting plastics very well in the river.

Potomac River
Aqua Land (301-259-0571) is reporting smaller croaker and perch biting on bloodworms and cut squid. There are a lot of eels in the river.
Columnist report: Dad and I hit the river to try the boat and test some gear. We fished just outside of Machodoc Creek and caught some croaker and plenty of perch. We used Fishbites and bait shrimp for bait. The fish were eating size. There is a lot of bait in the river.
