Time is running out for potential candidates for the Colonial Beach Town Council or School Board to get the necessary signatures to guarantee them a spot on the May 4 ballot.
Candidate Declaration Forms are due at 7 p.m. March 2. They must have the 125 signatures verified by Voter Registrar Kris Hicks at the Montross Voter Registration Office.
So far only four town council candidates, Steve Kennedy, Gary Seeber, David Coombes and Shane Buzby, and two School Board candidates, Vickie Roberson and Wayne Kennedy, have been spotted knocking on doors, asking for signatures.
When elected, these people will be the ones who decide how money will be spent as well as setting the tax rates and fees residents must pay. Town council sets policies on everything from road repair to garbage pickup.
With one week left, if anyone has the desire to run for office, it would be important to get signatures quickly. The forms can be picked up at the Voter Registrar’s office in Montross or downloaded from the Virginia State Board of Election Web site at www.sbe.virginia.gov.
