Deaconess Margie Payton

Deaconess Margie Payton, 70, of Colonial Beach died Friday, July 24, 2009, at Genesis Heath Care Center, Arlington.

She was the wife of Pastor Charles V. Payton, and the first lady of Morning Star Baptist Church in Montross.

A funeral was conducted  Wednesday, July 29, at Macedonia Baptist Church, Colonial Beach.

Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, Warsaw, has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Robert Mason Sealy

Robert Mason Sealy, 82, of Spotsylvania County died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at his home.

Mason was born in the Partlow area of Spotsylvania to the late Robert and Ivy Sealy. He was a 1944 graduate of Spotsylvania High School, and a U.S. Navy veteran, having served two years during World War II. He was a member of Sylvania Heights Baptist Church. Mason worked for 30 years in the accounting department of the FMC plant, and 27 years at Fredericksburg Auto Auction. He was a member of Elks Lodge 875 for 53 years. He was an avid softball player and manager, having played in the FMC league and the Fredericksburg City Fast Pitch League. He later managed and played with W.L. Allen Concrete (Allen's A's). Mason managed and played on several teams that won local and state titles.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Christine B. Sealy; his daughter Janice Sealy of Spotsylvania; his grandson Richard M. Pates of Beaverdam; his great-grandson, Cole Mason Pates of King George County; his brother Frank Sealy and his wife Linda of Fredericksburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Reta Sealy Pates; a grandson, Dennis Lee Beall Jr.; and a brother, Louis Elwood Sealy.

A funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 1, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Paul Harfst officiating. Burial with military honor  followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Wayne Kellum, Glenroy Green, Bobby Frank Sealy, Matthew Sealy, Ronnie Jordan and Kevin Jordan.

Eugene B. Benson, Jr.

Eugene B. Benson Jr., 68, of Glen Allen passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009, after a lengthy illness.

He is survived by his children, Donna Durrett and her husband, Hunter Jr., of Bumpass and Dale Benson and his wife, Melissa, of Milford; his grandchildren, Kristina Durrett and Dale Benson Jr.; one brother, Bobby Benson of Glen Allen; and one sister, Frances Thorpe of Colonial Beach.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Sr. and Carlotta Benson; and two brothers Paul Sr. and Franklin Benson.

The family received friends   Sunday, Aug. 2, at Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Highway, Ashland.

A graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 3, in Pohick Episcopal Church cemetery, Lorton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Lung Foundation.

June Elizabeth Edgell

June Elizabeth Edgell, 83, of King George County died Friday, July 31, 2009, at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, Md.

Born in Indian in Tazewell County on June 1, 1926, to the late Lawrence and Oakley Rose, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Edgell, and her three brothers, Cecil, Glen and Finley Rose.

Mrs. Edgell graduated from Big Creek High School in War, W.Va., and worked at the Naval theSurface Warfare Center in Dahlgren before retiring.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Edgell, of Fredericksburg; her daughter, Kathy Riffe, of Moucks Corner, S.C.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

She loved to play golf and was a past club champion at Dahlgren Golf Course. She was a member of Hanover Baptist Church.

Over the past several years, June's ability to work around her house and to travel was limited. Still, she was looked after quite well by her dear friends, especially neighbors Rondal Eller and Billy Polen.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with a memorial service following immediately at 7 p.m.

Danny L. Williams

Danny L. Williams, 56, of Milford died Friday, July 24, 2009, in Colonial Beach of an apparent heart attack.

He was employed for 16 years in the maintenance department for King George County schools.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Williams; one son, Derek Williams; three daughters, Danielle Wil liams, Fortune Williams and Camilla Williams; and one grandson, Daveon Purce, all of King George. He also leaves behind his mother, Madeline Williams of Milford; five sisters, Jacqueline Williams of Woodford, Ada Ferguson of Dawn, Janice Kilgore of Ruther Glen, Saundra Williams of Manassas and Audrey Hammonds of Fayetteville, N.C.; and two brothers, Robert Williams of Milford and David Williams of Fredericksburg.

A funeral was conducted Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Old King George High School Auditorium, 8246 Dahlgren Road.  Burial followed in Historyland Memorial Park, King George.

David Franklin Drummond

David Franklin Drummond, 67, of Colonial Beach passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond.

David was born Sept. 14, 1941, in Fredericksburg, to the late Dorsey Jehu and Elizabeth Jeanette Barnes Drummond.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jo Ann M. Drummond; his son, David F. Drummond Jr., and his wife, Ashley F. Drummond, of Colonial Beach; one brother, Dorsey J. Drummond Jr., and his wife, Joy K. Drummond, of Mt. Holly; one sister-in-law, Joan D. Drummond of Colonial Beach; two granddaughters, Caitlin Dawn Drummond and Elizabeth Rose Drummond of Colonial Beach; one grandson, Jacob Curtis Van Duyn of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by two sisters, June Drummond and Jean Edwards, and brother James Barnes Drummond.

David was a 1959 graduate of Oak Grove High School, in Oak Grove, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 until 1965, serving aboard the USS Lowry during the Vietnam War and Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of the Westmoreland Jaycees and was a fan of car racing and classic cars.

David was employed for 33 years at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren, until his retirement in January, 1997. He then served as trustee and custodian at Colonial Beach Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Bell Tower Sunday school class.

The family received friends Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Colonial Beach Baptist Church. Burial will be in Historyland Cemetery, King George.

Jessica R. Gohring

Jessica Ruth Gohring, 23, of Bronx, N.Y. passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009, in King George County.
Jessica was a recent graduate of Hofstra University in Long Island. She loved all sports and was a member of the MetNY U23 rugby team.
She is survived by her parents, Edward and Doris Gohring of King George; a brother, Michael Arthur Gohring Sr. of King George; and her paternal grandparents, Roger and Amy Gohring of Ceres, Calif.
A funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. Ted James officiating. Burial will follow in Historyland Memorial Park, King George.

Michael Arthur "Little Man" Gohring Jr. 5, of King George County passed away Saturday, July 25. 2009.
He was a student at King George Elementary School.
Survivors include his parents, Michael A. Gohring Sr. and Loretta L. Hamilton, a sister, Breanna Hamilton, and a brother, Dustin Hamilton, all of the home; maternal grandparents, Robert L. Pitts and Linda S. Pitts of King George, and Edward W. Gohring and Doris B. Gohring of King George; paternal great-grandparents, Roger and Amy R. Gohring of Ceres, Calif.
A funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. Ted James officiating. Burial will follow in the Ferrell family cemetery on Pine Hill Road in King George.

Dr. Timothy O. Smith

Dr. Timothy O'Neal Smith, 53, of Columbia, Mo., formerly of Dahlgren, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at his residence. He was the son of the late Olie Smith.
He is survived by his mother, Pearl Smith of Dahlgren; his two sisters, Gretna Y. Smith of Virginia Beach and Amy R. Smith of Spotsylvania County; and his brother, Thomas J. Louden of Fredericksburg.
A graduate of King George High School, Dr. Smith attended the University of Virginia, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He earned his master's degree and Ph.D. at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Timothy was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and a charter member of its Fredericksburg chapter.
A funeral was held at Saturday, July 25, at Union Shiloh Baptist Church, Laneview, with the Rev. Frederick Young officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Dorothy Anne Glass

Dorothy Anne Glass, 70, of Greenville, PA passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 22,2009 at UPMC Horizon, Greenville.  She was born on August 27, 1938 in Greensburg, PA to her parents, Thomas and Dorothy (Klingensmith)Chalmers.  She was a 1955 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School.
She was a member of Greenville Alliance Church, where she previously served as Deaconess.  Her interests included painting, reading, needle work, ceramics, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Glass, whom she married on January 21, 1956 and who passed away on January 7, 2006; her parents; and a brother, Kenneth Chalmers.
Surviving Dorothy is her family, including three daughters, Cindy Kyle and husband Tim of Mercer, PA, Sharry Holdren and husband Jay of Raleigh, NC and Deb Campman and husband Bob of Greenville; three sons, Richard "Chip" Glass and wife Bobbette of New Castle, PA, K. Daniel Glass of Greenville, and Rev. David Glass and wife Lisa of King George, VA; her mother, Dorothy Chalmers of Greenville; a sister, Patty Hall of Greenville; sixteen grandchildren including, Rick Glass, Bobby Glass, Marlie Glass, Polly Kyle, Britten Holdren, Dru Holdren, Kolby Holdren, Tate Holdren, Evie Holdren, Mazie Holdren, Nickie Campman, Cristi Campman, Liz Campman, Karissa Glass, Isiah Glass, and Lila Glass; a great-grandchld Samuel Campman.
A Funeral and Committal Service was held Saturday, July 25th at Loutzenhiser-Jordan Colonial Funeral Home in Greenville, PA with the Rev. David Glass, son of the deceased officiating.  Burial was in Delaware Cemetery.

Charles E. Scranage

Charles E. "Eddie" Scranage, 88, of King George County passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Minerva Scranage of King George; one son, Donald C. Scranage of Oxon Hill, Md.; one daughter, Elaine Ward of Lorton; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Perry Scranage Sr. of King George; and four sisters, Juanita Washington, Margie Bumbrey and Pansy Bumbrey, all of King George, and Mary Clark of Richmond.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at Little Ark Baptist Church, Owens, with the Rev. Dr. Michael T. Bell officiating. Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, in Quantico National Cemetery.His remains may be viewed from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal. The family will receive friends thereafter from 7 to 8 p.m.

Earl Clyde Conway

Earl Clyde Conway, 65, of King George County died Monday, July 20, 2009, at his home.
He is survived by one brother, Warren Conway and his wife, Hattie, of Stafford County; and two sisters, Hilda White of King George and Jeanette Canada and her husband, Willie, of Fredericksburg.
A memorial service was held  Tuesday, July 28, at Bailey Funeral Home, Fredericksburg.

Cornelia Charlotte Mundy

Cornelia Charlotte Mundy, 70, known as "Aunt Connie" to many folks, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Jeanette Mundy; one sister, Lena Errico and one nephew, Charles M. Mundy.
Born Oct. 14, 1938, in New York City, she moved to King George County and attended Mary Washington College, graduating with a degree in mathematics. She worked many years at the Naval Weapons Laboratory in Dahlgren (now known as the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division). She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in King George.
She is survived by her brother, Dr. Charles B. Mundy and wife Elsie; her nieces and nephews Cindy Mundy and husband David Cochran, Christine Mundy and husband Donald Combs, Claude Mundy and fiancee Patricia Vickers, Cary Mundy and lifelong companion Greg Kelley, Michelle Mundy and husband Charles M. Mundy, Frank Errico and wife Jenny, and Tina Errico. She is also survived by her beloved dog Angel.
A funeral was held Tuesday, July 28, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, 11089 James Madison Parkway (U.S. 301), King George, with the Rev. Michael D. Finn-McKenzie officiating. Burial  followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg.

Dorothy E. Thomas

Dorothy E. Thomas, 90, of Colonial Beach died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Sunrise of Severna Park, Md. She was the widow of Lloyd B. Thomas.
A retired bookkeeper for the state of Maryland, she was the former treasurer and an active member of Colonial Beach United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by two sons, Larry Elliott and Larry C. Thomas; three daughters, Carol Whittington, Kathy Stelle and Eileen Weaver; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Helen Hennig. She was preceded in death by son Jeffrey Elliott and great-granddaughter Sabrina Barony.
A funeral will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Fort Myer Chapel (adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery), with interment in Arlington National Cemetery. A memorial service for Mrs. Thomas will be held at Colonial Beach United Methodist Church at a later date.

Rhonda Bryant-Kidwell

Rhonda Bryant-Kidwell, 37, of Colonial Beach passed away Friday, July 24, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Rhonda was a homemaker, and is survived by her husband, Ryan Kidwell, and her two daughters, McKayla Bryant and Toni Kidwell, all of the home; her father, Danny A. Bryant; her mother and stepfather, Pamela Bryant-Scruggs and Willie Scruggs; and a brother, Kevin R. Bryant.

Danny Larry Williams, 56, of King George County died Friday, July 24, 2009, in Colonial Beach. He was born in Sparta, VA, June 29th, 1953 and lived in Milford, Va.
Visitation is scheduled from Noon to 8p.m. on Friday, July 31st with  the family receiving friends from 7-8p.m. at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, 25662 A.P. Hill Blvd, Port Royal, VA.
A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, August 1st, 2009 at 11:00a.m. at the Old King George High School, 8246 Dahlgren Road, King George.  Remains may be viewed one hour prior to the service.

Arbutus Tompkins Vanover

Arbutus Tompkins Vanover, 66, loving mother and grandmother, passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at her home with her loving family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was a retired employee of the Prince William County school system and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Lee Vanover Sr.; her parents, Frank and Nora Tompkins; and three brothers, Donnie, Buford and Cephas Tompkins.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicky and Tom Motley of Rockingham, N.C., and Patricia and Paul Walsh of Rhoadesville; one son, Boyd Lee Vanover Jr. of Colonial Beach; six grandchildren, Tommy Motley, Greg Motley, Amanda Walsh, Tracy Walsh, Morgan Vanover and Marissa Vanover; one great-grandchild, Peyton Michael Lee Walsh; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifford and Geraldine Tompkins of Johnson City, Tenn., and Danny and Maggie Tompkins of Wise; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Norma Tardiff of Springdale, Ark., and Clayetta and Lee Hobbs of Pound; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral for Arbutus Vanover was  held Sunday, July 19, at the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Wise, with the Rev. Randy Carter officiating. Burial followed in Shelcy Mullins Cemetery in Pound.

Renee Marie SeGuine

Renee Marie SeGuine, 75, of Colonial Beach, died Monday, July 13, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Survivors include her daughters, Stephanie Phipps of Glenn Dale, Md., Barbara Kaltenheuser of Washington, D.C., Donna Carter of Fredericksburg, and Angela Engelmann of Derwood, Md.; her brother, Roi SeGuine of Falls Church; her sister, Joan Beavers, of Toms Brook; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Carter, and her sisters Nonie SeGuine and Barbara Sandusky.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Colonial Beach. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
A second Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Washington, D.C., at a future date.

Gunnery Sgt. David S. Spicer

Marine Gunnery Sgt. David Shane Spicer of Montross died Monday, July 13, 2009, outside Delhi, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations against enemy forces.
He proudly and honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps as an explosive ordnance disposal technician. He had joined the Marines in 1994, upon graduation from high school in Ohio.
David was born Oct. 13, 1975, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Sandra and Gary Lockwood. On July 23, 2005, he married Katrina A. Thompson, who survives him. They made their home in Montross.
He was stationed for a number of years at Indian Head, Md., with CBIRF and continued his service with the Second EOD Company aboard Camp Lejune, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, David Shane Spicer II, on July 18, 2008.
In addition to his loving parents and devoted wife, he is survived by his beloved daughter, Abigail; his soon-to-be-born son, Chance; and his mother-in-law, Linda Armstrong, who resides with the family. He also leaves behind his three brothers; one sister; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, most of whom reside in Ohio.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.
Burial will take place with full military honors at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 23, in Arlington National Cemetery.

Susan Lucks Gardner

Susan Lucks Gardner, born January 7, 1958, beloved wife of Paul Brian Gardner, passed away on July 6, 2009, after a long valiant battle with cancer.  Susie was active in many Colonial Beach organizations, including the Colonial Beach Fdn., Party on the  Potomac, the Historical Society, and the Chamber of Commerce.  She and her husband Paul co-owned Blue Moon Productions and the Blue Moon Antique shop on North Irving Avenue in Colonial Beach.
She leaves behind her parents, David J. Lucks, Sr. and Elizabeth A. Lucks; stepmother Diana Wilson; brother David J. Jr.; sister-in-law Mary; nieces Megan and Rachel; step sisters Emily and Alice; aunt Jane Dowrick Whitlow and her husband Michael; uncle Charles Dowrick, Jr. and his wife Laura; as well as nephews and nieces and cousins.  Also surviving are her mother and father-in-law Alice M. and Frank W. Gardner; sisters-in-law Lydia Leeds, April Gardner, and Ami Cannon.
An informal memorial service will be held at Dockside Restaurant on the point in Colonial Beach, Virginia on Thursday, July 16th at 1:00p.m., followed by a reception at St. Mary's Parish House at 2:00p.m.

Virginia Manuel Atkins, 90, passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She was born to George Washington Manuel and Dora Lee Gwinn Manuel on Aug. 31, 1918, in Wythe County. She was the widow of Joseph H. Atkins, who passed away in 2002.
Virginia held several retail positions while living in the Washington, D.C., area.  She also was employed as a receptionist at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach.
Virginia enjoyed her membership at Rebecca Lodge 94, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Daughters of Virginia, Eastern Star and the Woman's Bible class of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Virginia was predeceased by her son Steve Atkins in 2006 and by 14 brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her sons David Atkins and his wife, Sandra, of Glenville, N.Y., and Joseph Atkins of Colonial Beach; three grandsons, David Robert and his wife, Mona, and Daniel and William Atkins; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Friday, July 10, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. Burial was in Historyland Cemetery, King George.

Viola Haislope Mason

Viola Haislope Mason, 85, of Stafford County died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was a longtime member of St. George's Episcopal Church.
Viola was the daughter of Fannie Evelyn and Thomas Monroe Haislope, born in Millenbeck (Slab Town) in 1924. She was proud of her Northern Neck heritage and proudly claimed her position as a "Necker!"
Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Melba Packett of Warsaw.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Samuel P. Mason; her two sons, Thomas Mark Mason and Byron K. Hinton and his wife, Patricia; her grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley Hinton; and her sister, Louise White and her husband, John, of Burkeville.
Mrs. Mason was a retired civil servant from the Dept. of the Navy at Dahlgren; a life member of the Izaak Walton League for which she was a past president of the Virginia Division, and past member of the National Endowment Board. She served Stafford County for many years as a commissioner on the Wetlands Board.
The funeral service was held Saturday, July 11 at Covenant Funeral Service,  Fredericksburg, Va. with the Rev. Larry Lenow officiating.  Interment followed in the Corrottoman Baptist Church cemetery in Ottoman.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the church of one's choice or the Micah Ministries of Fredericksburg, 1013 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.

Robert Joseph Crowder

Robert Joseph "Bob" Crowder, 65, of Stafford County died Friday, July 10, 2009, at his home, surrounded by family after a brief and courageous battle with stomach cancer.
Bob was born Aug. 27, 1943, in Washington, D.C., where he grew up. After receiving his bachelor's degree in physics at Lynchburg College, he began his career at the Naval Weapons Laboratory, now Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, in exterior ballistics where aiming data for Navy projectiles and unguided missiles were produced. He retired in 2003, after 38 years of service, ending his career as head of the Command and Combat Control Systems Division. He was the recipient of many awards and honors, including the John Adolphus Dahlgren Award in 2000.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy S. Crowder; his three children, Robert Crowder Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Stafford, Grant Crowder and his wife, Elizabeth, of Annandale, and Sydney Crowder of Stafford; his sister, Patricia Montrief and her husband, Wayne, of Stafford; five granddaughters, Avery, Laurel, Haley, Reese and Caroline; three nephews; two nieces; and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert England Crowder and Laura Isabel Lankford Crowder.
A longtime resident of Stafford, most of his enjoyment came from his family, and from his days spent vacationing on the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland. He battled and beat prostate cancer in 1998, and regularly attended local prostate cancer support groups for the past 10 years, making many new friends.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 14, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. James Vaught officiating. Burial was private.
In lieu of flowers, it was Bob's request that memorial contributions be made to either the Cancer Center of Virginia, 6105 Health Center Lane, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407, specifying that donations be utilized for the Prostate Cancer Support Group, or to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.

Alfred Michael Arnott

Alfred Michael Arnott, 51, of King George County died Friday, July 10, 2009, at his residence.
He was born July 21, 1957, in Morristown, N.J., to Jeanne M. Arnott and the late Alfred S. Arnott.
He worked as a senior systems engineer for Chugach at Dahlgren. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the American Legion, and was a plank owner on the USS Halyburton FFG 40.
Survivors included his wife of 25 years, Carol A. Arnott; his children, Courtney F. Silverthorn, Ph.D., and her husband, Matthew, of Gaithersburg, Md., USMC Cpl. Daniel M. Arnott of Jacksonville, N.C., and Alyssa M. Arnott of King George; his mother, Jeanne M. Arnott of Piscataway, N.J.; his brothers, Stephen Arnott and his wife, Melinda, of South Bound Brook, N.J., and Timothy Arnott of Spotsylvania County; his sister, Jill Robb and her husband, Andrew, of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Colonial Beach. Burial will follow in Historyland Memorial Park, King George.
The family  received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.

Michael R. McGinniss

Michael R. McGinniss, 45, of King George County died Sunday, July 12, 2009. He was a self-employed drywall installer and boat mechanic, who loved to sail.
He is survived by his five children: Amanda, Samantha, Michael, Ryan and Allison McGinniss; two sisters, Patricia M. Bowler and husband Billy Bowler Jr., and Jeannie M. Allison and husband Kenny Allison; a number of nieces and nephews; and his fiancee, Kelly Powers.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with Helen Lehr officiating the cere-mony.  Burial will be private.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the funeral home.
Arrangements are being handled by Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.

Bertha Mae Stevens

Bertha Mae Stevens, 95, of King George, VA died Sunday, July 12, 2009 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mrs. Stevens, born March 8, 1914, was the widow of John M. "Jack" Stevens. She was the oldest member of Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women.
Survivors include her children, Marie Williams and her husband, Herbert of King George, Jean Fulford and her husband, Elton of Sarasota, Fla., John Stevens, Jr. and his wife, Ethel of Glenolden, Pa., Joseph Stevens and his wife, Loraine of Triangle, and Robert Stanley Stevens and his wife, Lorraine of Stafford County; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Shirley Snellings and Roberta Thompson.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 16 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel with Rev. Keith Boyette and Rev. Elfie Finn-McKenzie officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15 at the funeral home.

Helen Armstrong Lilly

Mrs. Helen “Bonnie” Armstrong Lilly, 66, of Colonial Beach, Virginia, passed away on June 12, 2009, in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, VA.
She was the wife of Darrell Clark Lilly for 20 years. They were married in Ottawa, Kansas while she was employed as the administrative assistant to the president of an international crane company. She and her husband moved to Colonial Beach in 1999.
Born in Wilmington, DE, she was the only daughter of William W. and Helen Armstrong, long-time residents of Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburgh, PA.  
She is survived  by her husband, and three brothers: W. Warren Armstrong of Allentown, PA, J. Scott Armstrong of Drexel Hill, PA, and H. Lloyd Armstrong of Newbury, MA plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School in 1960 and a graduate of Hood College in 1964 with a B.S. degree. Shortly after graduating from Hood, she began working for NCR Corporation teaching computer systems usage to bank clients. She moved to McLean VA to work with Head Start Women in Fairfax County. From there she went to work with Sen. George McGovern’s presidential campaign in 1972 as the assistant radio news director. After the campaign she began working with the women’s movement and in 1974 was elected president of the Northern Virginia National Organization of Women (NOW). She had her own interior decorating firm, catering to upscale clients in the D.C. area for many years.
 A memorial celebration of her life will be held for family and friends on August 15, 2009, from 10:30 -12:30 p.m. at The Grange Estate, 143 Myrtle Ave., Havertown, PA.
