Paul Rufus Rice

Paul Rufus Rice, 84, of Stafford County died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at his home.
Among his survivors are nine children. In his home lived granddaughter Paula Ann Rice and her children, Chelsea, Courtney, Andrew, Caylee and Adam.
A funeral service was held Thursday, November 19, 2009 at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, 150 Country Club Dr., SW, Blacksburg, Va. 24060.

Janet C. Johnson

Janet C. Johnson, 48,  affectionately known as “Smokey,” entered into eternal rest on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at her home in Bowling Green.
Janet was born May 9, 1961, to Alice Kenny and the late Jesse Pierce. She joined Zion Grove Baptist Church at an early age, under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. S.H. Carter. She served with the Youth Choir, the Youth Ushers and BTU. She later became a Sunday school teacher, president of the Board of Christian Education, secretary for the Trustee Ministry, superintendent of the Sunday school and the first female deacon of Zion Grove.
She sang with the Voices of Zion Choir and also founded and sang with Grace X Three Gospel Singers.
She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Prentiss Twiggs of Bowling Green; two grandchildren, Namir and Naiaja Smith, and an adopted daughter, Myeisha Smith, all of Richmond; one adopted son, Mitchell Twiggs of Dawn; her goddaughter, India Anderson; her mother, Alice Kenny of Woodford; one brother, John Kenny and his wife, Sheila, of Woodford; a devoted aunt and godmother, Gloria Reynolds and her husband, Aubrey, of Woodford; six aunts; five uncles; a devoted cousin and best friend, Greer Johnson of King George County; three nieces; two nephews; Baron Johnson of Accokeek, Md.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Janet was preceded in death by her father, Deacon Jesse Pierce, stepfather John Kenny and brother Bradley Kenny.
A visitation was held at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home Inc., 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Va. 22427.
A homegoing celebration was held Saturday, Nov. 21, at Zion Grove Baptist Church, 9450 Richmond Turnpike, Woodford, Va. 22580. The Rev. Kenneth J. Grasty, pastor, will deliver the eulogy. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Dolores Carmen Torralbas

Dolores Carmen Torralbas, 79, of King George County went to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, in Fredericksburg.
She was born in New York City and was a graduate of Mary Washington College. After graduation, she was a teacher at James Monroe High School. She married and moved to Cuba until 1961, when she and her husband moved to Waldwick, N.J. She remained there for 32 years, first as a teacher, and then as a principal at Waldwick High School.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann T. Cocke and her husband, Thomas F. Cocke IV, of King George and Annette Torralbas of Vienna; four grandchildren, Ashley Dennison, Thomas F. Cocke V, Christopher Torralbas and Steven A. Cocke; one great-grandchild, Nathan L. Dennison Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben R. Torralbas; and her son, Ruben J. Torralbas.
A gathering of friends was held Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. All other services will be held at a later date in Waldwick, N.J.

Robert Temple Ryland, Jr.

Robert Temple Ryland Jr. of “Farmington” in King and Queen County passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.
He was born in Weeksville, N.C., in 1930, the son of Robert Temple Ryland and Neva Austin Ryland. At the age of 11, he moved with his family to Sharps, where his father was teacher, principal and later superintendant of Richmond and Westmoreland County schools. He attended the University of Richmond and graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering in 1951. He married Anne Mitchell Motley, his childhood sweetheart from Sharps, in 1952.
They moved to Sharon, Pa., where he designed transformers for Westinghouse. In 1954, he began his federal career at the Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren, becoming involved in computer hardware design and computer management.
Mr. Ryland held deputy and acting department head assignments in Test and Evaluation, Engineering, Electronics Systems and Warfare Analysis. He served as head of the Electronics Systems Department, the Strategic Systems Department, the Protection Systems Department and the Personnel Department. He served on the Technical Director’s staff, including as assistant to the director.
In 1989, he was appointed head of the Engineering and Information Systems Department, the position from which he retired in 1992.
He received numerous awards and commendations including, the John Adolphus Dahlgren Award (Dahlgren’s highest honor) for his achievements in the fields of science, engineering, and management; the NAVSWC Human Awareness Award, in recognition of individual worth and dignity; the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award, in recognition of contributions of high value to the U.S. Navy; and was a charter member of the United States Senior Executive Service, a corps of executives selected for federal government service based upon their leadership qualities.
He attended the Federal Executive Institute at the University of Virginia, and participated in several Brookings Institution conferences.
Mr. Ryland was active in many community organizations. He was a charter member of the Dahlgren Lions Club. He was a member of the King and Queen County Planning Commission, serving as chairman, and was instrumental in developing the county’s Comprehensive Plan. He was a member of the King and Queen Historical Society, serving both as president and treasurer. He had been a member of the King and Queen Tavern Museum Council since its inception. He was also an avid Redskins fan and longtime season ticket holder.
He was a devoted member of Bruington Baptist Church, serving as deacon for many years and chairman of various church committees. He served on the executive committee of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society. He was moderator of the Mid-Tidewater Baptist Association and served in many other capacities.
Mr. Ryland’s enthusiasm for life was evident through a lifetime of service, a love of country, an ongoing desire to learn, a love of history, a passion for gardening, a love of books, and an inquisitive passion for science, engineering and technology. His great love of family was evident through a lifetime of leadership, caretaking, guidance, family historian, mentoring, sharing and support for both his immediate and extended families.
Mr. Ryland is survived by his wife, Anne Motley Ryland, of “Farmington,” King and Queen. He is survived by his brother, John Newton Ryland III and wife Darlene of Danville, and his sister, Dorothy Ryland Garber of Cobbs Creek. He is also survived by his five children and their spouses: Elizabeth Ryland Newton and husband Jeff of Culver, Ind.; Robert Temple Ryland III and wife Cheryl of McCalla, Ala.; Anne Ryland Glubiak and husband Peter of Walkerton; Catharine Ryland Wolford and husband Jerry of Supply; and John Motley Ryland and wife Donna of King George County.
His grandchildren are Thomas Hurst Newton, Patricia Anne Newton, Robert Temple Ryland IV (Kristen), Austin Brooks Ryland, Leonora Mitchell Ryland, Joshua Davis Glubiak (Meg), Zachary Ryland Glubiak, Somerville Gwathmey Glubiak, Joseph Edward Wolford (Katherine), Andrew Jackson Wolford, Benjamin Ryland Wolford, Sarah Temple Ryland, Melanie Anne Ryland, and Samuel Motley Ryland.
A memorial service will be held at Bruington Baptist Church, King and Queen, on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m., with a reception afterward for friends and family.

Jacqueline Joyce Armell Hyde

Jacqueline Joyce Armell Hyde, 82, of Oak Grove passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Jacqueline was born in Warrenton and worked for the American Red Cross, and was a retired real estate agent.
Jacqueline is survived by her husband of 62 years, Stuart Ashby Hyde; her daughter, Bonnie Jean Martin of Yanceyville, N.C., and her husband, Forrest Martin; her son, Michael Ashby Hyde of Oak Grove and his fiancee, Terri Lee Newman; her brother, Richard Armell and his wife, Channing, of Basye; and her stepmother, Bernice Armell Baker of New Market. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Christin Michelle Umsted of Whitesboro, Texas, and her husband, David; Rachel Mallory Day and her husband Jeremy of Colonial Beach; and Seth Michael Hyde of Dahlgren. She was preceded in death by son Ronald.
A celebration of Jacqueline’s life will be planned in the near future for family and friends.
