Area Deaths - February 3, 2010

Irene Lortie

Irene Lortie of King George County passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at her home.
She lived in and around Montgomery, W.Va., for the first part of her life. Irene was a member of Wilderness Community Church.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Dana Rex Lortie; a son, Nutie Ray Miller and his wife, Judy, of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; two daughters, Linda Incao of Warrenton, Pa., and Dee Dee Holloran and her husband, Joe, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters, Pauline Mascaro and her husband, Lou, of Montgomery, W.Va., and Hilda Keffer of Kimberly, W.Va.; two brothers, Bill Bob Hill and his wife, Patsy, of Hughes Creek, W.Va., and Luther Ray Hill of Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Mabel Hill; and a son, Larry Lee Miller.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 30, at Wilderness Community Church, with Pastor Keith Boyette officiating. Burial will be in Hill Cemetery in Belva, W.Va., at a later date.  Online condolences may be expressed at foundandsons.com.

Stephen Chuhta

Stephen Chuta, 78, of Fredericksburg, VA, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.
Mr. Chuhta had retired as a program manager from the Department of Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Edith H. Chuhta; two sons, David Chuhta of Trumbull, Conn., and Glenn Chuhta of Colonial Beach; a daughter, Sandra Mallette of Hanover, Pa.;  his sister, Theresa Engelke of Melbourne, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
A service was held Monday,  Feb. 1, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.  Burial was  in Quantico National Cemetery with military honors.

Alvin L. Jett

Alvin L. Jett, 80, of Spotsylvania County passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Jett is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mrs. Shirley Jett of Spotsylvania; two sons, Robert and his wife, Barbara Ann, of King George County, and Ricky and his wife, Carla, of Spotsylvania; and three daughters, Linda Cole and her husband, Gary, Lori Shelton and her husband, Bobby, and Kathy Curtis and her husband, Burt, all of Spotsylvania. Additional survivors include a sister, Geraldine Shelton of King George; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph; son William Alvin Jett; and a grandson, Ronald Doggett Jr.
A funeral for Mr. Jett was held Monday, Feb. 1. at Found & Sons Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Farrow officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

William Douglas Payne

William Douglas “Doug” Payne Sr., 87, of Colonial Beach died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Payne was born July 6, 1922, in Marshall, a son of the late Percy and Edith Fishback Payne. He was a veteran of World War II, and had been an electrician for 40 years.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his wife, Jesse Jane Payne; one daughter, Gwennie Payne; and one brother, Francis Payne.
Survivors include one daughter, Dale P. Thomas of Fredericksburg; three sons, Doug Payne Jr. of Marshall, Randy Payne of Amissville and Allen Payne of Colonial Beach; one sister, Charlotte Duncan of Marshall; one brother, Vernon Payne of Winchester; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday, Feb. 1, at Royston Funeral Home, Marshall, officiated by the Rev. Steven Payne. Interment was in Marshall Cemetery.

Charles Hart

Charles “Chuck” Hart, 64, of King George County died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Hart of King George; two daughters, Susan L. Davidson of King George and Claudia Hart of Lansing, Mich.; a son, Charles Hart Jr. of King George; his sister, Mildred Rose of Mississippi; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Cedell Brooks Memorial Chapel, Port Royal, with the Rev. William T. Frye officiating. Mr. Hart’s body was cremated.

Anthony D. Del Giacco

Surrounded by his family at home, Anthony D. “Tony” Del Giacco, 70, born in Troy, N.Y., and a longtime resident of Fredericksburg, was welcomed into God’s Kingdom on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010.
Tony was proud of his honorable service in the U.S. Army and attended Potomac Baptist Church in King George County. He retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service as manager of Martin & Boyd Spring Works in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his best friend and loving wife of 40 years, Patricia Lynch Del Giacco; his six children, Michael, and his wife, Sandy, of De Pere, Wisc., David, and his wife, Gina, of Lake Forest, Calif., Kellie Liming of Spotsylvania County, Daniel of Troy, N.Y., Andrea Vrooman and her husband, Steve, of King George, and Michelle Del Giacco Kelley of Stafford County; a sister, Ann Yamin, and her husband--and Tony’s special friend--Daniel, of Brainard, N.Y.; a brother, Albert, and his wife, Carolyn, of Troy; 12 grandchildren, Joshua Reaver, Candace Wine, Danielle Del Giacco, Samantha Kelley, Rachel Liming, Matthew Pitts, Nicole Del Giacco, Billy Kelley Jr., Carley Vrooman, Katie Del Giacco, Kasey Liming and Amanda Del Giacco; and two great-grandchildren, Remy Reaver and Trinity Nuckols.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Michael S. Del Giacco and Pasqualina Del Giacco; sisters Marie DePaoli, Antoinette Swingle, Virginia Archambeault and Lorraine LeFleur; and mother-in-law Emma Lynch.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at Potomac Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Newton officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m.  in Quantico National Cemetery.

Stewart George L. Darling

Stewart George Louis Darling, 28, of King George County died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at his residence.
Survivors include his parents, Ronald Darling of King George and Lori Darling of Georgia; his sisters, Jen and Athena Darling, both of Georgia; his paternal grandparents, Helen and Wayne Darling of Michigan; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Smith of California; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
There will be no services.

Ruth E. McDaniel

Ruth E. McDaniel, 93, of King George County went to meet her savior on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.  She had been lovingly cared for at Hearts at Home and by the Medic Home Health and Hospice.
Ruth was born June 30, 1916, in Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Robert and Irene Rawlette McCauley.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Thornton F. McDaniel; a brother, Robert McCauley; and two sisters, Ethel Bredekamp and Hilda Hazard.
She is survived by one son, Rick and his wife Maggie McDaniel; her cherished granddaughter, Michelle McDaniel; and Frances Ensminger, her dearest friend, all of King George,  and two nephews and three nieces.
She was raised in King George by her grandparents.  She and her husband together ran T. F. McDaniel Grocery in King George for more than 40 years.  She was a lifelong member of Hanover Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and also taught the BTU and vacation Bible school.
Her friends will miss her contagious laughter and sense of humor.  Also missed will be her childhood tales of “little Ricky,” her competitive weekly Boggle game, her summertime love of croquet and her enduring passion for the welfare of animals.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in KG.   
A service will begin at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Bill Boyer officiating.  Interment will follow in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens, (formerly Historyland Memorial Park) in King George.

Eva Arlen Sanders

Eva Arlene (MeMe) Sanders, 69, of Mechanicsville, MD, formerly of Colonial Beach, VA, died February 1, 2010 after a brief illness.  
Arlene was predeceased in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Sanders and her mother, Elizabeth (Betty) Duley.  
She is survived by her four children, Cathy Shumaker, Jimmy Alderson (Nancy), Steve Alderson (Lynn), and Kelly Raley (Hoppy).  
She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren: Josh Shumaker, Mike Alderson, Amanda Shumaker, Shane Alderson, Ashlee Alderson and Samantha Raley and one great-grandchild, Landon Gatton.  
MeMe is also survived by her BFF, Kim Young whom was also her caregiver during her recent illness.

Area Deaths - January 27, 2010

Katherine Childrey Smith

Katherine Childrey Smith, 86, of King George County passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, William Taylor Smith Jr.; their five children, William T. Smith III of Port Royal, Elizabeth B. Stobie of Tucson, Ariz., Sandra S. Pickett of Fredericksburg, Albert E. Smith of Prairie, Miss., and Linda G. Smith of King George; as well as eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Ann G. McAvoy of Ohio.
A secretary and bookkeeper, she completed her training at Pan American Business School in 1942 and worked for many organizations during her long career. She retired for several years after World War II to raise five children, and returned to work when the youngest started school.
Mrs. Smith was an avid knitter, making countless sweaters and other items. She loved children and always enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 22, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. Richard Headley officiating. Interment will be at a later ate at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in King George.

Donald Lee Wheeler, Sr.

Donald Lee Wheeler Sr. of Colonial Beach passed on to everlasting glory on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010.
Don was the son of Edward Carl and Nettie Owen Wheeler, and was born and raised in Savage, Md., along with his five brothers and one sister: Leonard, Joan-Ann, Bobby, Marvin and Ricky.
Don worked his entire career at the University of Maryland physical plant, College Park campus. He was a joyful member of Welcome Grove Baptist Church as well as the Colonial Beach Moose Lodge.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Hester Susan, and their children, Marsha, Teresa and Donnie, and other loved ones he was honored to call his children: Bill, Mike, Anita and Allen. He is also survived by his grandchildren; he truly believed that each and every one was his greatest pride and joy: Christopher, Ashley, Douglas, Brandon, Victoria, Julie, E.C. and A.J.
And as Don ended each night that we were with him, we all now say to him: “Goodnight, Sweet Dreams, God Bless, I love you” to our beloved Honey, Daddy and Pop-Pop.
His family  received friends  Thursday, Jan. 21, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, where a funeral was held Friday, Jan. 22.
Interment followed immediately at Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens, King George. Afterward, family and friends gathered at Bowie’s Restaurant, State Route 3, Oak Grove, for fellowship and healing.

Ruth Snyder McIntosh

Ruth Snyder McIntosh, 94, of King George County passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010.
She is survived by her sons, Richard F. McIntosh and his wife, Deborah, and John “Larry” McIntosh and his wife, Mary “Sue”; seven grandchildren; 14great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard and Deborah will be receiving friends at their home from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31. Please contact them directly for directions.

Gustie Wallice Sullivan, Jr.

Gustie Wallice Sullivan Jr., 65, of King George County died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Sullivan was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Stafford County.
Survivors include his sisters, Diane Richardson of Partlow and Wanda Ponton of Stafford; and his best friend, Betty Ann Fincham of King George.

John Edwards Shaw

John Edwards Shaw, 67, of King George County went to be with his Lord and Savior and was found deceased in his home Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010.
John was born Oct. 4, 1942, in Portsmouth, and was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert Shaw and Carlie Meece Shaw.
John is survived by two brothers, George R. Shaw and his wife, Elaine, of Spotsylvania County, and James A. Shaw and his wife, Dean, of King George; one sister, Gloria S. Peregory of Spotsylvania; four nieces, Susan McCalmont of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Sharon Campbell, Mary Jenkins and Teresa Haynes, all of Spotsylvania; four nephews, James D. Shaw and Timothy W. Shaw, both of King George, Michael Peregory of Spotsylvania and Joseph Peregory of Mineral.
John was a well-known local artist. His painting of a squirrel chewing on an apple made the cover of Virginia Wildlife magazine in 1977, thus launching his artistic career. John left his Dahlgren space surveillance job in 1982 to become a full-time artist.
John attended the King George Church of God, where he was involved with the benevolent ministries. The last nine years of John’s life were spent giving and caring for others. In recent years, John’s Christian faith led him to paint religious themes, including a detailed painting of the Crucifixion, titled “He’s Alive, I’m Forgiven,” that includes 50 different details and characters, all drawn from Scripture.
All the proceeds from sales of prints of this painting go to benefit the benevolent ministries at the King George Church of God.
John’s funeral was Saturday, Jan. 23, at King George Church of God, with the Rev. Lance Bacon officiating. Burial followed in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens (formerly Historyland Memorial Park) King George.
Pallbearers were Kirk Burns, Bill Blakely, Michael Peregory, James D. Shaw, Jeffrey Hughes and James Mauro.

Lawrence F. Altaffer, Jr.

Lawrence F. Altaffer Jr., 85, of Warsaw passed away Friday, Jan. 15, 2010. He was the widower of Virginia S. Altaffer, a member of Warsaw Baptist Church, and a retired manager for Pet Dairy.
Mr. Altaffer graduated from Warsaw High School and entered the Navy V12 Program, attending VMI and U.Va., and graduating from University of South Carolina. After graduation from USC, he joined the U.S. Marines and served as a first lieutenant in World II and the Korean conflict.
Survivors are his son, Dr. Lawrence F. Altaffer III of Syria; his daughter, Elizabeth A. “Betty” Lumpkin and her husband, Billy, of Richmond; four grandchildren and their spouses, Virginia Anne Lumpkin, Anne Altaffer Asplin (Brian), Elizabeth Altaffer Fedowitz (John), and Lawrence F. Altaffer IV; and two great- grandsons, Max and Henry Fedowitz.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 23, at Warsaw Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the home after the service.

Kenneth G. Thorsted

Kenneth G. Thorsted, 80, of Fredericksburg passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose, who passed away in 2001.
He was an aeronautical engineer who was recognized as a propulsions expert and retired from the NSWC in Dahlgren. He held several patents for inventions in the aerospace industry.
He is survived by 12 children: Michael K. Thorsted and his wife, Stacey, of Spotsylvania County; Michelle “Shelley” M. Morgan and her husband, Dennis, of Spotsylvania; David G. Thorsted and his wife, Laura, of Rhoadesville; Patti T. Payne and her husband, Rick, of King George County; Laure D. Browne and her husband, Joe, of Spotsylvania; Stevie L. Thorsted and his wife, Pam, of Freeport, Fla.; Gregory G. Thorsted and his wife, Mary, of King George; Teresa T. Seamon and her husband, John, of Alamogordo, N.M.; Gary E. Thorsted and his wife, Teresa, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Martin L. Thorsted and his wife, Chris, of Roswell, N.M.; Mark B. Thorsted and his wife, Shelby, of Fredericksburg; and Susie M. Thorsted of Fredericksburg.
Mr. Thorsted is also survived by one sister, Darlene Hooper of Anaheim, Calif., 35 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends and a rosary was held on Friday, Jan. 22, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service Fredericksburg Chapel.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 23, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Zula Ferrara Ware

Zula Ferrara Ware died in her home Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband John W. “Jack” Ware.
She is survived by her children, Marguerite Ware Keady, John Waller Ware Jr., Frances Ware Lieb and her husband, Joseph Lieb; her grandchildren, Anne Ware Keady, John Walter Keady, Jennifer Frances Lieb and Katherine Marguerite Lieb. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Anna Roberts Ware, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Zula was born in Fredericksburg and graduated from Mary Washington College. She taught commercial education in Falls Church and at Strayer Business College before moving to Essex County.
At Tappahannock High School, she opened the Commercial Education Program. She also met Jack Ware who would become her husband for 33 years.
Together they shared a love of family, laughter, good food, and a Christian spirit that inspired them to help friends and neighbors as well as strangers who were in need.
Zula’s parents immigrated to America from Italy, and her Italian heritage helped to shape her values. She was a devout Catholic and was one of the founding members of St. Timothy Catholic Church. Her love of her faith and her family were the primary forces in her life. Frequently she demonstrated this love with bountiful Italian meals, which she served to her family, neighbors and anyone in need.
The family received visitors Friday, Jan. 22, at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock.
The funeral Mass was celebrated  Saturday, Jan. 23, at St. Timothy Catholic Church, followed by the burial in Rappahannock Cemetery.

James Wallace Musselman

James Wallace “Wally” Musselman III, 84, of King George County, formerly of Colonial Beach, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Musselman was a proud U.S. Navy World War II combat veteran and a life member of VFW Post 10574 in Colonial Beach and American Legion Post 89 in King George.
He is survived by his son, James W. Musselman IV and his wife, Catherine M. Lutzen, of King George; his daughter, Debra Deans of Gainesville, Fla.; his sister, Mildred Ehrhardt of Springfield; and his grandchildren, James W. Musselman V of Colonial Beach and Debra Deans of Gainesville.
A visitation was held  Monday, Jan. 25, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, and the funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 26, with the Rev. Janie Nickle officiating. Burial wasbe in Quantico National Cemetery.

Area Deaths - January 20, 2010

Paul Edward Bohrer

Paul Edward Bohrer of Colonial Beach passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010. He was one of 13 children and the son of John and Ethel Bohrer of Berkley Springs, W.Va.
He resided most of his life in Arlington and then retired in Colonial Beach in 1985. There he built a sunroom, garage addition and bulkhead, all while on crutches, with the help of his beloved wife. Paul was a veteran of World War II, having joined the Merchant Marines at 16 years of age.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Marion Raymond, who passed away in 2004, their 2 year old daughter Linda, their married son, Paul Jr. and his dear friend Margaret Welch.
He is survived by his daughter Sherri and her husband, Robert Piriak; his two grandchildren, Tammy Sandler and Chris Williges; along with six great-grandchildren, Blake, Samuel, Paige, Ellie, Naomi and Daniel Sandler.
The family received friends on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at the Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 14.

Sarah E. Robinson

Sarah E. Robinson, 92, of King George County died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010. She was a member and church mother at Salem Baptist Church and served on the deaconess board.
She is survived by two daughters, Geraldine Robinson and Dorothy McDowney; and one son, Woodford Robinson III, all of King George; one sister, Margaret Robinson of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Frank, Robert, Major and George Holmes, all of King George; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Sat., Jan. 16, at Salem Baptist Church, Jersey, with the Rev. Leonard G. Bland officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends  at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, VA.

Pauline A. Perry Gibson

Pauline Auguster Perry Gibson, 89, of Stafford County passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Bowling Green Healthcare Center with her family at her side. She was the widow of William Francis Gibson, who died in 1966.
Mrs. Gibson, born Dec. 30, 1920, in Fredericksburg, was the daughter of the late William Samuel Perry and Della May Minter Perry. She was a homemaker and a longtime childcare provider. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Stafford.
Her survivors include four daughters, Mary Lee Boutchyard and her husband, Roger, of Stafford, Betty Jo Mitchell of Mechanicsville, Wilma G. Vaughn and her husband, Steve, of Spotsylvania County, and Deborah G. Sauder and her husband, Mark, of King George County; six grandchildren, Roger L. Boutchyard II, Sherri R. Boutchyard, Shelley M. Michalski, Shaun L. Mitchell, Jamie S. Rexroad and Amanda McClure; nine great-grandchildren, Scott Boutchyard, Krystal Constien, Jon Boutchyard, Ragan Michalski, Madison Michalski, Jacob Mitchell, Cameron Rexroad, Alyssa McClure and Jaysen Cox; one great-great-grandchild, Lawson Boutchyard; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mae Madgeline “Madge” Brooks; and three brothers, Leonard Stuart Perry, Clarence William Perry and James Melvin Perry.
A visitation and funeral was held  at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. H. Lowell Self officiating.

Esther Blanch Trigger

Esther Blanch Trigger, 81, of Fort Worth, Texas, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010.
Miss Trigger was born and raised in King George County, graduated from King George High School, then moved to Tacoma Park, Md., where she lived before moving to Texas to be near her sister.
Miss Trigger is survived by a sister, Lois Barker and her husband, Donald, of North Richland Hills, Texas; and a brother, Alfred S. Trigger of King George. She was predeceased by her brother Everett F. Trigger, also of King George, and 12 nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she served as a deaconess for many years. Her church was a very important part of her life.
A memorial service will be held on April 4, 2010, in Tacoma Park, Md.

Bobby Wayne Montrief

Bobby Wayne Montrief, 71, of Stafford County went to be with the Lord, Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
He retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center after a career of 38 years.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia C. Montrief; five children, Kevin Wayne Montrief and his wife, Cindy, Joy Leigh Montrief, Mark Alan Montrief and his wife, Susan, Scott Wilson Montrief and his wife, Wesley, and Jennifer Elizabeth Montrief; eight grandchildren, Jordan, Tanner and Kali England Rozum, and Katelyn, Luke, Isaac, Leigha and Garrett Montrief; three sisters, Faye Stultz, Margaret Martin, and Bonnie Montrief; and several nieces and nephews. He also shared his love with 39 foster children over the years. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
A funeral was held Mon., Jan. 18, at Ferry Farm Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Vaught officiating. Entombment followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens mausoleum.
Pallbearers were the Rev. Paige Young, James Reagan, Vincent Carr, Dale Middleton, Trevor Meade and Brock McDaniel. Honorary pallbearer was Brogan McDaniel.

Charles Noble Robertson, IV

Charles Noble Robertson, IV, 63, of Colonial Beach, died Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Robertson was a native of Riverside, Connecticut. He was a U.S.M.C. Vietnam Combat veteran and later served at 8th and I in Washington, D.C. as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard. Early in his work career, he was a group home counselor in Alexandria. After moving to Stafford in 1978, he began working for Fredericksburg City Juvenile Domestic Court. Later in his working career, he worked in project management and new homes sales in Stafford. In 1990, he established Curb Appeal Landscaping, which he ran until his retirement in 2008.
He joined the Stafford Volunteer Fire Department in 1978 where he was a life member, past president, and an honorary lieutenant. Charlie was a Board of Supervisors original appointee of the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Commission. He was a member of the Stafford American Legion Post 290 and the historic Friendship V.F.D. in Alexandria, VA. For a number of years, he was the team leader and lead instructor for the Rappahannock Region CISM Team. Upon retirement, he moved to Colonial Beach, where he became a member of the Colonial Beach Fire Department where he currently served as Chaplain. He was also the dock master at the Bayside Marina.
Charlie was a member of Aquia Episcopal Church, where he served as a lay Eucharistic minister.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Merry E. Robertson; two brothers, Bill Robertson of New Jersey and Eric Kreuter of Connecticut; a sister, Betsy Kreuter of Connecticut; one nephew; and four nieces.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 22 at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel with the Rev. Cuthbert Mandell and Rev. Jay Morris officiating.
Interment will be private.
Members of the Stafford Volunteer Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 21 at the funeral home.

Gregory Neal Tapp

Gregory Neal Tapp, 58, of Sebree, KY passed away 11:45 A.M. Sunday January 17, 2010 at his home.
He was a graduate of Western Kentucky University, a FFA advisor and a teacher (4 years) in King George County, Virginia.  He was also a deacon at Pennyrile Church of Christ in Madisonville.
He was preceded in death by his mother Norma Tapp (2009).
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kris (Ungemach) Tapp; his father J.A. Tapp; two sons, Kelby Tapp and Kaleb Tapp, all of Sebree, KY; one daughter, Cassie (Tapp) Orr and her husband Grant of Mayfield, KY; a brother, Keith Tapp, of Sebree, KY; two sisters: Cindy and her husband Jerry Brown of Sebree, KY and Joann Tapp of Nashville, TN; and two grandchildren, Hayden and Addyson Orr.

Henry Clay Williams

Henry Clay Williams, 93, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. He was born Jan. 16, 1916.
He married Elsie Virginia Lunsford in 1940 and they had one daughter, Gail Tennille.
In 1970 Clay and Elsie moved from Springfield to make their home at Longfield Farm in King George County, where Clay raised Black Angus cattle. Clay was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Ruritans, Colonial Beach Methodist Church and then Trinity UMC in King George. For years, he volunteered with the Cancer Society to drive patients needing chemotherapy to treatment.
He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Elsie Williams. He is survived by four sisters-in-law, Madileane Williams, Lucille Lunsford Alderton, Evelyn Lunsford and Martha Lunsford; his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Gail Williams Wertz and Dr. Andrew Ball of King George; and step-granddaughters Jennifer Ball Truitt and Katherine Ball Lemuz and their children.
He is also survived by 19 nieces and nephews: Ralph, Nancy and Donna; William and Dermott; Annie and Linda; Richard, Marie and Kathy; Ronnie, Faye and Kevin; Margaret, Barbara and Sally; and Jane, Donna and Ernie; as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral was held Sat. Jan. 9 at Trinity UMC, King George. Private burial will be in Millbank Farm.

Eleanor Mattison Geyer

Eleanor Mattison Geyer, 86, of Westmoreland County, VA, died on Dec. 29, 2009 at Mary Washington Hospital.  
Mrs. Geyer was born in Altmar, NY.  She also lived in Ambler, PA and was the widow of Albert G. Geyer, III of Ambler, PA.
She is survived by two sons; Albert G. Geyer (Jane) of Warsaw, VA and Charles A. Geyer (Anne) of Oak Grove, VA.
Also surviving are  two sisters; Virginia Pollic of Richland, NY and Ruth Larrabee of Detroit, MI; five grandchildren: Claudia Bracero, Houston, TX, Julie Geyer, Alexandria VA, Pierson Geyer, Colleen Geyer and Mary Claire Geyer all of Oak Grove, VA; and three great-grandchildren: Liam Geyer, Julian Bracero and Elena Bracero.

Louise H. Chinn

Louise H. Chinn, 83, of Spotsylvania County died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Golden Living Center of Fredericksburg.
Mrs. Chinn was born in Spotsylvania County, graduated from Spotsylvania high school and attended Mary Washington College.
She was a former longtime member of Falmouth Baptist Church where she had served as church secretary for several years. She also was a member of Spotsylvania Emergency Concerns Association (SECA).
Mrs Chinn retired from Spotsylvania County treasurers office.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, J.T. Chinn; three daughters, Peggy Hartsell and her husband, David, of New Bern, N.C., Susan Busch and her husband, Tom, of Richmond, and Annette Schaul and her husband, Steve, of King George County; son-in-law David Longfellow of Waco, Texas; three grandsons, three granddaughters and one great-grandson; brother James E. Hawkins of New Jersey; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Gerry Hawkins. She was preceded in death by daughter Nancy Chinn and brother Lester Hawkins.
A service was held Thurs., Jan. 7, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Leslie Powers officiating. Burial  followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Pam Correa

Pam Correa, 55, of King George County was carried to her heavenly father on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at her home.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Pam worked as a registered nurse for many years. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen L. Correa.
She is survived by a son, Shawn Correa of Florida; her father, Richard L. Correa Sr. of King George; five brothers, Richard, Dave, Mark, Shawn and Darren Correa; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. Her cremated remains will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Ohio.

Judith Irmgard Vogue

Judith Irmgard Vogue, 79, of King George County passed away Thur.Jan. 7, 2010, at her home.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Harvey L. Vogue; their four children, Halle A. Ray of King George, Curtis E. Vogue of San Diego, Calif., Eric L. Vogue of King George and Laurel L. Elrick of Albuquerque, N.M., as well as four grandchildren. She is also survived by her two brothers, Donald H. Heinze of New Mexico and Ernest O. Heinze of California.
A registered nurse, she completed her training at Lennox Hill Hospital in 1950 and practiced nursing in medical centers in San Francisco, Milwaukee, and Denver before retiring to become a full-time homemaker, mother and supportive military wife.
She was an avid crafter, producing award-winning work in knitting, crocheting and cross-stitch.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. Ed Johnson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

John E. Johnson

John E. Johnson, 85, of Montross died Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.
He was known to most as president of the Bank of Montross until his retirement in 1983. He was past president of the Rappahannock Shrine Club, a 32nd- degree Mason and a member of the Jesters. He was a member of Currioman Baptist Church and served as chairman of the board of deacons, a trustee, Sunday school director and a member of many other committees. He was commander of Montross Post 252 of the American Legion and a charter member of Montross Landman Lodge 293, A.F.& A.M. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his banking career, he was actively engaged in the real estate and appraisal business.
He is survived by his wife, Doris S. Johnson; and his son, J. Michael Johnson.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Currioman Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from noon until the time of the funeral.

James Mason Grigsby

James Mason Grigsby, 84, of Colonial Beach passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at his residence.
Mason worked as a police officer for Colonial Beach and served on the Colonial Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad. For more than 50 years he built houses and did carpentry work. In recent years, Mason helped his wife sell vegetables on Route 205 just outside the Beach Gate. In his final years, he enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching everyone go by.
Mason is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mildred M. Grigsby of Colonial Beach; six daughters, Ruth Norris, Shirley Hall, Frances Bowen Crawford and her husband, William, and Debbie Balderson and her husband, James, all of Colonial Beach, Bertha “Kitty” Luna and her husband, Hal, of Fredericksburg and Barbara Murphee and her husband, Michael, of King George County. Mason was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a very special puppy dog, Rosie.
A funeral was conducted Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with the Rev. Ron Okrasinski officiating. Burial will follow in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Garden, King George.

Nina Mae Berry Gautier

Nina Mae Berry Gautier, 96, of Washington, N.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009.
Born Dec. 18, 1912, in Hyde County, N.C., she was the youngest of four children born to Lenora and Ottavy Berry. She had two brothers, Claude and Ransey, and a sister, Orpha.
Nina went into training as a registered nurse, graduated and worked for Tayloe Hospital in Washington, N.C. There she met and married James Gautier Jr. They eventually moved north to Dahlgren, where they live for 50-plus years.
She gave up nursing in the late 1950s and opened a florist shop. Nina was active in the Eastern Star, Garden Club and Oakland Baptist Church, and had many other interests. She retired and sold the florist shop before moving to Fredericksburg. In her later years, she moved back to Washington, N.C.
Nina is survived by a daughter, Barbara Gaumont-Lanvin and husband Jean-Louis of Washington, N.C.; three sons, retired Capt. James B. Gautier and wife Ann of Burke, Bryan R. Gautier of King George County, and Rodney E. Gautier of Fairfax; 15 grand-children; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service honoring Nina’s memory will be held at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16. Burial of her ashes will follow at the Oakland Baptist Church cemetery in Owens.
Friends are welcome and the family will receive guest at the Oakland Baptist Church Hall immediately following the service.

John Francis Rovert

John Francis Rovert, 48, of Spotsylvania County died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Rovert was a devoted son, and a generous brother, uncle and friend.
He worked as a computer scientist at the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Dahlgren since 1985 and was an avid Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan.
Survivors include his mother, Ann F. Rovert; two sisters, Rosanne Alomar of Palmdale, Calif. and Christina Bacca of Bristow; two nieces, Andrea and Tatiana Bacca; two nephews, Talal and Sammy Alomar; and extended family in the Niagara Falls area.
Mr. Rovert was predeceased by his father, John, and a brother, David.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 at Dahlgren Chapel. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Niagara Falls, N.Y., at a later date.

William Patrick Parnell

William Patrick (“Bill”) Parnell, 87, of Stratham, N.H., passed away Jan. 6 after a long illness following complications from heart valve replacement surgery. Bill was the husband of Journal Contributing Editor Pat Parnell.
 Bill and Pat would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Jan. 29 this year.
A former resident of Falls Church, Va., Bill was born in Easthampton, Mass., the son of the late James Parnell and his wife Mary, a native of Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland.  
In addition to his wife Pat, he is survived by four sons and their wives. Howard and Mary Parnell, now of Falls Church, Va., are both former editors of The Journal. Bill and Pat’s other sons are William B. and Bernadette of Derry, N. H.; Edward J. and Ellen of Richmond, Va.; and Larry and Janice of Lansdowne, Va.
Bill was pre-deceased by a half-sister, Mae Ryan; by his brother and sister-in-law, James and Sadie Louise Parnell; and by Howard and Mary’s infant twins, Liam and Sadie Claire Parnell. There are eleven surviving grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his sister-in-law, Ruth Herrink, and her family.
He was salutatorian of his graduating class at St. Michael High School, Northampton, Mass., and received his B. A. Summa Cum Laude from St. Anselm College, Class of 1943. He held an M. A. from Boston University and pursued further graduate studies at Columbia University, NYC.
He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, completing his training as a communications officer at Harvard University.
Bill taught American history at Canisius College in Buffalo, N. Y., and at Annandale High School in Annandale, Va. After his retirement, Bill worked in the reference library of the Army Times newspaper in Washington, D.C. Upon moving to Stratham, N.H., Bill worked as a paralegal, doing real estate title abstracting.
A communicant of St. Michael Church in Exeter, N. H., Bill was active as a volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. He and his wife, Pat, were home communion ministers for the shut-ins. While living in Falls Church, Va., Bill was active in Democratic Party politics and in a Falls Church citizens group, Citizens for a Better City.
Bill enjoyed reading, especially history and biography, as well as mystery novels, and he was very fond of Celtic and folk music.  He was a strong Red Sox fan and an avid Washington Redskins supporter. His family and friends appreciated his quick mind and his wry sense of humor as well as his integrity and compassion.  He was a devoted family man, especially delighting in time spent with the youngest members. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, particularly with Elderhostel programs. Bill and Pat made three trips to Ireland, getting acquainted with his mother’s relatives there.

Dorothy B. Whorton

Dorothy B. Whorton, 77, of Spotsylvania County passed away Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at her home.
Dorothy was born Sept. 25, 1932, in Amissville, the daughter of the late Athey Buckner Burke and Dissie Jenkins Burke.
Dorothy was a member of Jeffersonton Baptist Church in Jeffersonton and was gentle, compassionate and selfless.
She exemplified kindness to all who were fortunate to know her. She was first and foremost a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose faith, grace and love firmly anchored her family. She absolutely enjoyed cooking and loved to watch football and was always an avid Washington Redskins fan.
Dorothy is survived by her children, George Whorton Jr. and his wife, Margaret, of Amissville, Shirley Hope and her husband, Jim, of Fredericksburg, Edward Whorton and his wife, Martha, of Culpeper, and Loretta Becker and her husband, Mike, of Spotsylvania; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Nathan Burke of Baxley, Ga., and a sister, Pearl McConchie of Colonial Beach.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, George Marshall Whorton Sr.; two sisters, Inez Whorton and Ida Mae Clark; and two brothers, Lee Burke and Ronnie Burke.
A funeral was held Monday, Dec. 28, at the Clore-English Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marshall Braylo officiating, and being assisted by Chaplain Bob Shultz. Interment followed in Culpeper National Cemetery, 305 US Ave., Culpeper.

Robert P. Johnson

On Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, Robert Pierce “Doc” Johnson, 87, went home and is now resting peacefully in the loving arms of his Heavenly Father.
Mr. Johnson served gallantly in World War II, surviving the sinking of his ship, the USS Colhoun, off the coast of Guadalcanal. He served 20 years in the Navy.
He retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Dahlgren.
Doc was preceded in death by his loving wife, Virginia Howard Johnson.
He is survived by his precious daughter, Patricia Anne Johnson Maness, and her husband, Mark, of Fredericksburg; and two brothers, James Johnson of Monterey and William B. Johnson of Fredericksburg. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Virgie Howard, brother-in-law, Carlton Howard and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doc is also survived by his “special” daughter, Stacy Lynch Muehlhauser, who cared for him with love and compassion.
A graveside service was held Wednesday, Dec. 30, in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Ronnie Ford officiating.
The family received friends Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

Danny Mullins

Daniel Glenn “Danny” Mullins, 59, of Stafford County died Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Mullins had worked for Stafford County as a landfill supervisor before becoming disabled. He was a member of Fredericksburg Eagles Lodge 4123.
Survivors include his daughter, Shelly Shackelford and her husband, James, and his granddaughter, Shelby Shackelford, all of Stafford; his brothers, Jimmy R. Rose of Michigan, Roger R. Rose of South Carolina, Steve Mullins of North Carolina and Frank Mullins of King George County; his sister, Barbara S. Clements of Caroline County; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Lester.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Laura Miller

Laura Mae Northington Miller, 89, of Colonial Beach journeyed to a more peaceful existence on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009.
Laura was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Prattville, Ala., to the late Leslie and Fannie Northington.
Mrs. Miller was a devoted member of St. Peter’s Episcopal church in Oak Grove, and a dedicated attendee of the Senior Citizen’s Center in Colonial Beach.
A graduate of Autauga County High School and Massey Business College in Alabama, Mrs. Miller worked for the federal government as a secretary and stenographer for approximately 35 years at the Pentagon. She lived in the Northern Virginia area for 60 years before moving to Colonial Beach, where she had resided for the past 10 years.
Survivors include her stepdaughter, Marie Bowie and her husband, George; three grandchildren, Donna Dodd and her husband, Jimmy, Charles Bowie and his wife, Susie, and Laura Coates and her husband, Robert; 11 great-grandchildren, Chris, Lisa and Sandi Dodd, Latane Bowie, Cainon, Jordan, Leah and Karsten Coates and Buddy, Billy and Joey Gibson, all of the Colonial Beach area. She also leaves behind a sister, Patty Turner, and a brother, Mags Northington, in Alabama; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Laura was predeceased by her husband, George Francis Miller, and granddaughter Debbie B. Gibson.
A funeral was held Wednesday, Dec. 30, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Oak Grove. Burial took place Thursday, Dec. 31, in National Memorial Park, Falls Church.

Lownes S. Leizear

Lownes Samuel “Mouse” Leizear, 87, of Oak Grove passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris E. Leizear.
Born May 11, 1922, in Hyattsville, Md., he was a son of the late Sam and Aggie Leizear. He was one of seven children.
Mouse was a proud World War II veteran, who served in the Army as a rifleman. He was wounded during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
He had a career as an operator at A.H. Smith Sand and Gravel plant in Branchville, Md. He was a member of the Branchville Volunteer Fire Co. & Rescue Squad, and a devoted member of the Neighborhood Watch in the Placid Bay community. He was a longtime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, watching westerns, listening to gospel music, sharing his memories of World War II and traveling to visit friends.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Lois Griffin of Oak Grove; his son, Gregory Leizear of College Park, Md.; his daughter, Karen Espinoza of Colonial Beach; his sister, Gladys Allen of Manchester, Md.; his grandchildren, Heather and Johnny Gutridge, and Juana and Alberto Espinoza; and his great-grandchildren, Emma Trau and George Gutridge.
He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
The family  received friends Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, where a service was held, Wednesday, Dec. 30.  Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, in Cheltenham VA Cemetery, Cheltenham, Md.

Ulysses Edwards

Ulysses Edwards, 66, of Falmouth died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Sentara Hospital in Norfolk.
He had been employed by CMC Concrete in Manassas for more than 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Edwards; three sons, James Edwards, Vaughan Edwards and Ulysses Edwards Jr.; three daughters, Yolanda Jenkins, FiFi Williams and Alicia Evan-White; four sisters, Victoria Smith, Johnnie Mae Saunders, Margaret Lyburd and Frankie Forest; a special niece, Rosalyn Mc- Kine; and his devoted companion, Celia McKinney.
A funeral will be conducted at        1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at First Baptist Church Ambar, King George, with the Rev. William Frye officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
