Rubynette Campbell Sanford

Rubynette Campbell Sanford, 86, of Montross, widow of Milton Sanford, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010.
She was retired stenographer for the Cooperative Extensive Service, and a member of Currioman Baptist Church, where she served as clerk for 45 years, church historian, a Sunday school teacher and various other committees.
Mrs. Sanford is survived by a son, Frankie Sanford (Patsy) of Bracey; and three brothers, Preston Campbell (Yvonne) of Ocean City, Md., Wallace Campbell(Barbara) of Southern, and Gilbert Campbell (Shirley) of Daytona Beach, Fla. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Sheila Sanford(Douglas); two great-grandchildren, Leah Hall(Justin) and Brandee Jones (Jeff); and four great-grandchildren, Blake Hall, Tarryn Hall, Carter Hall and Jackson Jones.
Also surviving is close friend and sister-in-law, Ruby Campbell.
A funeral was held Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Currioman Baptist Church. Interment followed in Currioman Cemetery.

Susan Johnson Roberts

Susan Johnson Roberts, 83, of Oak Grove went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010. She was born on Sept. 17, 1926.
She is survived by two wonderful sons, Theodore Streets Jr. and Ronald Streets of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Inita Baylor of Montross and Rosie Vaughan of King George County; two brothers, David Johnson of King George and Lawrence Johnson of Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family received friends at Little Zion Baptist Church, Oak Grove, Va., on Thursday, Aug. 26.
The funeral was held Friday, Aug. 27, with the Rev. Earl T. Howerton, pastor, officiating.
Arrangements are entrusted to Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, 22883 Kings Highway, Warsaw, Va. 22572.

Virginia Brown

Virginia Brown, 87, of Colonial Beach passed away Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010.
A funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 28, at First Baptist Church of Colonial Beach.
Arrangements are by Lee Funeral Home, King George.

Edna Lee Morris

Edna Lee Morris of Fredericksburg passed away at the age of 100, on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at Golden Living Center.
Mrs. Morris is survived by a son, Howard Morris of Dahlgren; two daughters, Darlene Stevens of Locust Grove and Mary Rose of Fredericksburg; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Morris, and son Randolph Morris.
Her funeral was held Thursday, Aug. 26, at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Burial followed in Beulah Baptist Church in Westmoreland County.

Mary Ann Early

Mary Ann Early, 59, of Charlottesville made the journey back home to God on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, succumbing to a long illness. She died peacefully at her home with her family at her side.
She was preceded in death by her parents, the Honorable Horace A. Revercomb Jr., and Mrs. Mary Virginia Revercomb of King George County, and her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Revercomb Wilson, of New Cumberland, Pa.
She is survived by her brothers, James A. Revercomb of Ashland and the retired Honorable Horace A. Revercomb III; her husband, John H. Early, of Charlottesville, and their daughter, Mara Rhodenizer (Trey), of Charlottesville; and three grandsons, Carter, Peyton and Harris. She also leaves behind her dear and devoted friend and caretaker Judy Willis, of Charlottesville.
She was a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing, and was employed as a registered nurse at the UofVA Hospital for 17 years. She was a member of Saint Paul’s Ivy Episcopal Church,
A memorial service was held Sunday, Aug. 29, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ivy, officiated by Rector Miller Hunter. Interment was  private in the churchyard.
Donations be made in her honor to the American Heart Association, or to the Hospice of the Piedmont.

Julian H. Griffith

Julian H. Griffith Jr., 92,  of King George County died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010,  at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Griffith was born May 18, 1918, in Fredericksburg. He was the son of the late Julian Hungerford Griffith Sr. and Cornelia Flemer Griffith.
Mr. Griffith retired from civilian employment at the Dahlgren Navy base. He then had time to enjoy many years of gardening, always looking forward to planting time in the spring, and sharing vegetables from the garden with his friends and family.
Mr. Griffith is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Margaret Allensworth Griffith; his son, Frank Wayne Griffith (Susan), of Chesterfield; his daughter Judith Griffith Crockett of Bristol; his daughter Jacqueline Gay Baker (Vernon), of King George; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by one brother, Edward Colville Griffith (Margaret Ann), of Fredericksburg.
A funeral was held on Saturday, Aug. 28, at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, in Oak Grove. A private interment followed the service and reception.
The family received friends at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in King George.

Helen M. Koval

Helen M. Koval passed from this life to be with her Lord on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She had been lovingly cared for, for 10 years at her home with her daughter and son-in-law.
Born April 22, 1930, to Paul and Willie Ensminger in Iaeger, W.Va., she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John R. Koval, on Aug. 24, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Harry Ensminger of Stevenson, W.Va., Joe Ensminger of Chattanooga, TN, and Jack Ensminger of Charlotte, N.C; sisters-in-law Gwen Ensminger of Bolton, MA, Marie Ensminger, of Bluefield, WV., Helen Ensminger of Charlotte, and Judy Ensminger of Hixon,TN; and her dearest friends, Nellie Taylor, Mae Porterfield Hall and Inga Graham, all of Fredericksburg.
She is survived by her only child, Carla, and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Russell; a granddaughter, Rhonda M. Richardson (Tommy), and their daughters, Carlyn, Caitlyn, and Cristalyn; her grandson, Robert L. Russell II (Kermora), and their two children, Alexis and Robert.
Helen is also survived by a brother, Ted(Ruth), of Jacksonville, FL; her beloved brother Fred, who visited her faithfully for 10 years and his wife, Frances, of King George; a brother, Ray (Verna), of Princeton, WV.; her only sister, Dorothy Wiles of Spring Valley, WV;  and a dear friend, Jean Lohr Mosely of Mount Airy, N.C.
She also leaves behind many dear nieces and nephews--too numerous to mention--but not forgotten.
A funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel with her son-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Russell officiating. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Theodore J. Bakker

Theodore J. “Ted” Bakker, 55, of Grand Rapids, Mich., went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Elizabeth Bakker; and a sister, Janet Bakker.
Ted is survived by his brother, Donald Bakker (Kathi) of King George County; his nephew, Donald W. Bakker (Lana) of King George; his nieces, Cheryl Kleinman (Lloyd), of King George, and Michelle Whitelaw (Ryan), of Talbot, Tenn.; nine great-nephews; two great-nieces; one great-great-nephew; and one great-great-niece.
The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 29, at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th St. S.E., Grand Rapids, MI, 49508,  with the Rev. George Aupperlee and the Rev. Bob Boersma officiating. Interment followed in Blain Cemetery.

Mary Cooper

Mary A. Cooper, 89, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at Richmond Community Hospital.
She is survived by two brothers, Farrish Purce of King George County and Marrill Purce of Colonial Beach; and one sister, Selena Johnson of Clinton, Md.
A funeral will be held Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Earl T. Howerton Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Maryland National Memorial Park in Laurel. Remains may be viewed one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Clyde C. Stone

Clyde C. Stone, 59, died at home on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born and raised in King George County.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Carson Stone of AL. Clyde is survived by his mother, Mamie Stone of King George; sisters Ida Williams of King George, Dorothy Crabtree of Colonial Beach, Hazel Massey of Port Royal, Shirley Askew of Woodland, NC, and Anita Mullins of Havelock, NC; brothers Kenneth Stone of King George, Donald Stone of Orange County and Gene Stone of Spotsylvania County; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Clyde was a longtime resident of Havelock, NC, and employee of Gray’s Texaco. He will be truly missed by his family, friends and co-workers.

Brenda I. Thomas

Brenda I. Thomas, 59, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Tommy Thomas of Colonial Beach; one daughter, Lisa Daugherty (Shawn), of Colonial Beach; her parents, Bobby and Louise Wood of Colonial Beach; one brother, Billy Wood(Carol), of Mechanicsville, Md.; and one granddaughter, Sarah Louise Daugherty.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens, in King George, with the Rev. Richard Headley officiating.

Annabelle Williams Dickens, 91, of King George County passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010.

Christopher M. Garrison

Christopher M. “Big Country” Garrison, 31, of Colonial Beach died Monday, Aug. 30, 2010.
Born in Farmville and a graduate of Colonial Beach High School, he was employed by PAR Services.
He is survived by his mother, Jeanne Acree and brother, Douglas W. Garrison (Lori), all of Colonial Beach; two sisters, Ashley and Kelsey Garrison of Drakes Branch; paternal grandmother Bernice Hailey of Keysville; and three nieces.  Also surviving is his former wife and friend, Tina Chrisman. He was preceded in death by his father, M. Douglas Garrison; paternal grandfather Bobby Hailey; and maternal grandmother Elizabeth Jenkins.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with the Rev. Richard Headley officiating. Burial will be private.  A visitation will be held Friday, starting at 2p.m. until the funeral service.

Doris Ann Cropper Shannon

Doris Ann Cropper Shannon, 45, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born to Charles and Doris Cropper on March 8, 1965, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Cropper Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Tony Shannon; a stepson, Chris Shannon of Colonial Beach; a brother, Robert Cropper; two sisters, Amy Peyton (Lawrence), and Vicky Cropper, all of King George; and numerous nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Malik, who called her his “Dee-Dee.”
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Christian Outreach Tabernacle Church, Jim Morris Road in Spotsylvania County, with the Rev. Norman Galimore officiating.

Henry Wilson Ashton

Henry Wilson “Coach” Ashton, 85, of Tappahannock died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010.
Coach Ashton was born and raised on a farm in the Tetotum area of King George County. In 1940, he graduated from King George High School, where he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams.
After graduation, he served his country proudly in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator on the B17 bombers.
After his discharge in 1946, he enrolled at the College of William and Mary. He was a regular infielder on the Tribe’s baseball team in his senior year, and went on to play semipro baseball for several teams in King George and Tappahannock. In 1950, he graduated from William and Mary with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.
After teaching and coaching junior varsity basketball at King George High School for one year, Coach Ashton accepted a position as a physical education teacher and coach at Tappahannock High School in 1951. For many years he coached all boys and girls sports at the high school, including football, baseball, boys basketball, and boys track.
Although he loved all the sports he coached, baseball was always his first love. In 1988 he was named state baseball Coach of the Year by the Virginia High School Coaches Association. In 1991, he received the ultimate honor for a coach when the baseball field at Essex High School was named for him. He cherished this honor for the rest of his life and took great pride in helping to make the field one of the finest facilities in the region. In his final year as head coach, the 1999 team won the Group A state championship. He retired as head coach after that season, having won 425 games. He continued to serve as an assistant coach for the Essex High School baseball team until the 2009 season. Along with his coaching duties, he served as athletics director at both Tappahannock and Essex high schools. He taught physical education, Spanish, and driver’s education. He touched many lives in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and behind the wheel in the driver’s education car.
He was a longtime member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a member of the adult choir. He was a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins, and he shared his passion for the team with his son and grandson.
As a baseball fan, he loved to watch the Atlanta Braves and admired their manager, Bobby Cox. Earlier in his life, he had been a longtime fan of the Washington Senators, and he was happy to live to see baseball return to the nation’s capital.
Coach was loved by many in the Tappahannock community, in the Northern Neck, and in his native King George, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son, Henry Benjamin Ashton II (Annette); his grandson, Henry Benjamin Ashton III; and his sister, June Ashton Steppe, all of Dahlgren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Madeline Fenwick Ashton, who was the most supportive spouse a coach could ever have; and by his parents, Henry Benjamin and Nellie Wilkins Ashton.
A funeral was held Thursday, Aug. 19, in Beale Memorial Baptist Church, Tappahannock. Interment will followed in Essex Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock.

Marie M. Saft

Marie M. Saft, 90, of Greenfield Assisted Living, in Stafford County, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010. Marie was a longtime resident of Dahlgren.
Marie was born Sept. 17, 1919, to James T. and Eva B. Murray of Binghamton, N.Y. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather Thomas Murray and a brother, James T. Murray Jr.
Marie is survived by her husband, Woodrow “Woody” Saft, of Stafford; three children, Clare L. Painter, Rose M. Johnson (Sonny), and Thomas P. Saft, all of King George County; and nine grandchildren: Catherine M. Ritz (Mike) of Fort Worth, Texas; Wendy Shepherd (Joe), of King George; Michael A. Painter of Three Rivers, Mi.; S. Nichole Houck (Keith), of King George; John D. Painter of Fort Worth; Abbey Crew (Randy), of Wilmington, N.C.; Christy Lingerfelter (Jason), of Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska; Lauren Saft of Virginia Beach; and Dana Saft of King George; six great-grandchildren, Christopher Ritz, Joseph Ritz, Sarah Ritz and Karen Ritz of Fort Worth, and Joshua Lingerfelter and Faith Lingerfelter of Elmendorf AFB; and one niece, Marie Post of Orange City, Fla.
Marie and Woody were married on Aug. 7, 1943. They traveled the world after retirement.
Marie was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Dahlgren, since 1942. She worked at K-Lab and Space Surveillance before retiring from civil service. Marie was an avid card player, bingo player and loved to be with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her many friends.
A memorial service was held at Nash and Slaw Funeral Home, King George, on Saturday, Aug. 21. Interment will be private.

Mary Kelsie Anderson

Mary Kelsie Anderson, 78, of Colonial Beach went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010.
Born in Alexandria on Sept. 16, 1931, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, Leon Stewart Anderson, as well as her mother, Kelsie G. Quayle, and her three brothers, Ronald, Roderick and Robert Quayle.
She will forever be missed by her three children, Mimi Fowler, Donna Crooker and Stewart Anderson (Bonita); her seven grandchildren, Brittany and Brooke Fowler, Kenny, Kimberly and Kristi Crooker, and Will and Nina Anderson; her nine great-grandchildren; and extended family and many friends.
She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Alexandria and, most recently, of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Colonial Beach. She was also an active member of the Legion of Mary.
In 1987, Mary retired from the Social Security Administration after more than 30 years of service.
Mary was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Moose Lodge, and the American Legion. She enjoyed donating her time to many events and charities of her local church and the Colonial Beach Ladies Auxiliary.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Father Vincent Brok and the Mary Washington Hospital Hospice staff. Her prayers will always be with you.
The family received friends Thursday, Aug. 19, at Cunningham Funeral Home, in Alexandria, where a funeral was held Friday, Aug. 20.  
Interment followed in Quantico National Cemetery.

Freda Chilton Clift

Freda Chilton Clift, 76, of King George County passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, peacefully at home with her family by her side.
She was born Freda May Chilton on March 30, 1934, to Earl and Mary Chilton of Stafford County.
In 1955, she married the love of her life, Gene Clift and moved to King George, where she and Gene set up home and, upon her first child’s birth, she became a full-time homemaker.
Freda was a lifetime member of the King George Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a longtime member of Trinity Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and a member of the United Methodist Women’s Organization.
Freda loved to cook and often provided meals to the sick and to shut-ins. Her “Freda” bread will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She loved to tend her vegetables and flower gardens. Friday trips to Fredericksburg with her dear friend Verda Thompson were a highlight for 30 years.
She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, James E. “Gene” Clift; her children, James “Bowie” Clift(Marlene), of Christiansburg, Bryan Clift (Venue), Venus, of King George, and Paula Clift Spiller of King George; and grandchildren Sarah and Cole.
She is also survived by her sister, Susie C. Hicks; brothers Earl Chilton Jr. (Emily), and Ernest “Punk” Chilton (Shirley), all of Bowling Green; and sister-in-law Ann, who was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Chilton.
Freda will be dearly missed by everyone whose life she touched.
A funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 21, at Trinity United Methodist Church in King George, with the Rev. Charles Chilton (Freda’s first cousin) and the Rev. Michael Finn-McKenzie, pastor, officiating.

Toni Kazuko Seratte

Toni Kazuko Seratte, 75, of King George County passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.
Mrs. Seratte was born in Kumamoto City, Japan. She married her husband, Leymon D. Seratte, on Nov. 28, 1958.
Mrs. Seratte worked at the commissioned officers’ club at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren, from 1971 until retiring in 1992.
Survivors include her husband of almost 52 years, Leymon Seratte; her three children, Kathlene Seratte of Spotsylvania County, Lee Seratte (Judith), of Fredericksburg, and Randolph Seratte (Tita), of Winchester; her grandsons, Devon Lambert and Graham Seratte; her granddaughter, Mary Antonette Sharp of Winchester; and her great-granddaughter, Mikyla Sharp.
Condolences may be expressed in the form of contributions to the American Lung Association, lungusa.org; or the Dahlgren Rescue Squad, 16037 Dahlgren Road, King George, Va. 22485.
A graveside interment service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 24, in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fredericksburg.

Jean Marie Hicks

Jean Marie Hicks, 50, of Colonial Beach died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at her home, with her family at her side.
Mrs. Hicks was a dispatcher for the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office and a member of the Eagles Lodge in Colonial Beach. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Robert E. and Elizabeth A Childers; and one brother, Richard L. Childers.
She is survived by her husband, Harry L. Hicks, of the home; one son, Ian L. Hicks of Colonial Beach; three brothers, Robert A. Childers of Fredericksburg, William “Wild Bill” Childers of Colonial Beach, and Thomas E. Childers of Montross; and one granddaughter, Lillian Deanna Hicks. Also surviving are 13 nieces and nephews; and two great-nieces and -nephews.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 24, with the Rev. Richard Headley officiating. Burial will be private.

James E. Chappell

James E. “Butch” Chappell, formerly of King George County, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, in Gaston, S.C.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Chappell Knable.
He is survived by children Christopher Tedeton of Mineral, and Loren J. Hills, Byron J. Chappell and Greta L. Rita Laverne Lightfoot

Rita Laverne Lightfoot, 64, of King George County passed away peacefully Saturday evening, July 31, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was surrounded by her family and friends during her final hours.
A member of the Dahlgren Chapel Family, she loved the fellowship, acceptance and support they offered her.
Preceded in death by her parents, Amos and Alice “Tinker” Erwin, she is survived by her devoted husband, John “J.T.” Lightfoot; her children, April Ann Tavin and Tia Denny of California, and Jeri L. Berryman and Robert Lightfoot; her granddaughter, Shalayne Berryman; and her brothers, Alan and Leon Erwin, all of Texas.

Earline Patricia Johnson

Earline Patricia Johnson, 47, of King George County died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She is survived by two daughters, Latoya Johnson and Laqueasha Scott, one son, Lewis Scott, and her parents, Anderson and Shirley Johnson, all of King George. Also surviving are eight brothers, George, Timothy, Michael, Kevin, William and Thomas Johnson, and Kevin and Larry Beverly; six sisters, Laverne Smith, Verlette Davis, Delorise McDowney, Mary Johnson, Cynthia Freeman and Barbara Johnson; and one granddaughter.

Clifford Wilkerson

Clifford “Buddy” Wilkerson of Spotsylvania County went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lawrence Wilkerson and Gladys Dillon. Also preceding him in death were his brother, William Wilkerson; his sister, Gladys Rogers; a daughter, Patricia Diane Donovan; and great-grandchildren Brandon Luttrell, Logan Strother and Lance Strother.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Edna Wilkerson; three daughters, Joan Eagle(Bobby), of Spotsylvania, Ethel Johnson(Ray), of King George County, and Teresa Payne(Kenny-Ray), of Spotsylvania; seven grandchildren, Wendy Luttrell, Melissa Hoskins, Michael Johnson, Larry Strother Jr., David Johnson, Richard Donovan Jr. and Deanna Norton; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A service was held Sunday, Aug. 8, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. R. Kenneth Brooks officiating. Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Charles Allen Carter

Charles Allen “Rod” Carter, 76, of Fredericksburg passed away Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
He was an Air Force veteran and had retired from the Dahlgren Naval Weapons Laboratory and Fredericksburg Auto Auction.
Survivors include his daughter, Charlotte Ann Unterseher(Jeremy), and three grandchildren, Landon, Nora and Connor, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Mary Kay Chatt of Tarboro, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Wine and Betty Newsome of Fredericksburg, and Nancy Johnson(William), of Spotsylvania County; and two brothers, John Cole Thomas(Marie), and George Thomas of Fredericksburg. He also had numerous nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and -nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Jack A. Marcom Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Phyllis Sisson

Phyllis Sisson went to her eternal celebration with the Lord on Monday, August 9, 2010 with her family by her side after a courageous fight with lung cancer.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Sisson; her mother, Margaret Herrera; a sister, Frankie Reynolds and a brother, L.W. Reynolds.
She is survived by her son and caregiver, Christopher W. Swann of King George County; her daughter and comfort giver, Myra Hardesty(Bill), of Dentsville, MD and also Gene and Mary Yaukey.  Three very special people in her life were her son, John C. Yaukey, her niece, Mary Margaret Pitts and her grandson, Justis Hardesty. Phyllis was especially loving and proud of her grandchildren, Kayla, Justis and Mylee Rose Hardesty and Brittany and Liane Swann.
Services will be held at a later date at Charles County Four Square Church in LaPlata, MD.

Roy N. Mullins

Roy N. Mullins, 62, of Partlow passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010, at his home.
He was the son late Herschel “Jack” and Reba Maggard Mullins. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a truck driver and plumber.
Roy is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mildred; a daughter, Ruby Burcham (John), of Partlow; two sons, Joseph Mullins (Tina), of Partlow and James Mullins of King George County; his sister, Uva Branham of Richmond; and three grandchildren, Jackie Mullins, Kyle Burcham and Ashleigh Burcham, all of Partlow.
A funeral was held at the Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service-Spotsylvania Chapel on Wednesday, July 28, with the Rev. Jerry Mullins officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

George William Garbers

George William Garbers, 85, of Colonial Beach passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010, at his residence.
George had retired from the U.S. Navy as a master chief gunner’s mate with 24 years of service. He also retired from the University of California at Los Alamos, N.M., and was a member of VFW Post 10574, Colonial Beach.
George is survived by his wife, Valerie Garbers, of the home; three daughters, Paula Johnson of Oregon, Randi Sue Robertson of Missouri and Kali Rose Garbers of Colonial Beach; three sons, Mark Garbers of Alaska, George William Garbers Jr. and Christopher Carl Garbers, both of Colonial Beach; a brother, Charles A. Garbers of Alexandria; two grandchildren, George William Garbers III and Elizabeth Ann Garbers, both of Colonial Beach.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington.

Lydia Kelly Connelly

Lydia Kelly Connelly, 94, of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Connelly was the widow of Richard Franklin Connelly, who passed in January 1987.
She worked at the Public Works Department at Dahlgren, retiring in the ‘70s.
Survivors include her daughters, retired Lt. Col. Vivian Connelly of Fredericksburg and Felicia Cox (Richard), of Fallston, Md.; three granddaughters, Lydia Diklich (Donald), Donna Sue Cox, and Amy Phillips (Brett); and one great-grandson, Julian Cox.

Helen Thayer

Helen Thayer, 97, of King George County died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 28, 2010.
A lifelong resident of King George, Mrs. Thayer was a homemaker and former co-owner of a country store in the county with her husband, the late James P. Thayer Sr.  The Thayers were married for 77 years.
She was a former member of Oakland Baptist Church of King George.
Survivors include her son, James P. Thayer Jr. (Amy) of King George, her caregivers. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Monday, Aug. 2, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. Interment was in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens in King George.

James H. Bland

Deacon James H. Bland, 91, of Dahlgren died Thursday, July 31, 2010, at Hearts at Home in Dahlgren.
Mr. Bland worked as rigger leader at Naval Surface Warfare Center-Dahlgren until retiring in 1974. He was a member of Little Ark Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Deacon Ministry and former member of the men’s Jubilee Chorus.
He is survived by his son, William Bland of Dahlgren; four daughters, Dorothy Johnson of Dahlgren, and Eleanor Norris, Joann Barnes and Joan Freeman, all of Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Little Ark Baptist Church, in Owens, with the Rev. Michael T. Bell serving as eulogist and the Rev. W.L. McKinley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Remains may be viewed Friday at the funeral home, starting at noon, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., and also one hour prior to the service at the church.

Edward Brown

Edward Brown, 81, of Colonial Beach passed on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Westmoreland Rehabilitation & Heath Care Center in Colonial Beach.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at First Baptist Church in Colonial Beach, with a viewing Saturday morning from 10 until the funeral time at the church. Interment will be in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens in King George.

Francene King Barber

Francene King Barber, 80, of Irvington, formerly of Warsaw, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, at Westminster Canterbury.
Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by her son Lewis, and grandson Luke.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, John Clark Barber Sr.; a son, John C. Barber Jr. (Grace); grandsons Carlton “Carl” (Sabrina), and Philip Scott Barber.
She was born in Currituck, N.C., attended high school in south Norfolk, and graduated from Meredith College, Raleigh, N.C.
She lived with her husband, a forester in southern cities. While living in Macon, Ga., she taught several subjects at A.L. Miller High School, and later in high schools in Alexandria. While in New Orleans, she became a licensed tour guide, and later a guide in Washington, D.C.
After moving to the Northern Neck in 1986, she continued to work in travel and tourism. She was chairman of the Northern Neck Tourism Council, and represented Richmond County on the board of Potomac Gateway Welcome Center and rose to chairman. After working in the Richmond County Tricentennial Celebration in 1992, she became an organizer of the Richmond County Museum and directed an all-volunteer staff and organization until her retirement in 2008.
A noteworthy project she completed was the restoration of the 1926 William Atkinson Jones Memorial, a gift from a grateful Philippine people.
Recently, Mrs. Barber co-authored the book “Warsaw,” a pictorial depiction of Warsaw, Va. She also served on the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church and was very active in the Episcopal churches in the communities where she lived.

Frances Marchant Baker

Frances Marchant Baker, 93, passed away Saturday July 17, 2010, at Farnham Manor.
She was born Frances Miriam Marchant on April 8, 1917, in Kinsale to her parents, William Bartlett “Cap’n Bill” Marchant and Frances Myrtle Hudson Marchant.
She moved to Colonial Beach in 1926. She graduated from Colonial Beach High School as valedictorian in 1934, attended Blackstone College for women 1934 through 1936, and graduated as salutatorian.
Frances married Alvin E. Baker in 1938 and lived on Yellow Hill Dairy Farm, where she helped with the farming and bookkeeping.
In 1957, Frances resumed her career for the Naval Surface Warfare Center and was assigned various projects, which included the ASROC, Poseidon and Polaris missile defense systems. She retired in 1977 and, in 1979, she and her husband wintered in Bradenton, Fla. for 14 years. Her husband, Alvin, died in 1996, and she continued to live winters in Bradenton until 2001.
In 2001, Frances moved to Farnham Manor and lived there until her death.
Frances is survived by a daughter, Frances Suzanne van der Valk (Ubbo), of Highland, Md.; her sons, David English Baker(Cathey), of Fairfax Station, and Edward Bartlett Baker(Paige), of Colonial Beach; two grandchildren, Frances Elizabeth van der Valk of Columbia, Md., and Marcellus Ubbo van der Valk(Claire), of Bethesda, Md.; stepgrandchildren Laural Koons(Carl), and daughters AnnMarie and Callie of Fredericksburg, Brad Madden(Stephanie), and daughter Hannah of Glenn Allen; and a sister, Jacqueline Reamy Curtis of Colonial Beach.
Frances was preceded in death by her brother, William Bartlett Marchant, and sister Malinda Marchant Brown.
A funeral was held Thursday, July 22, at Colonial Beach United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Brant Hays officiating. Interment followed in Round Hill Baptist Cemetery.

Helen Jones Richards, 91, of Supply departed this life Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at a local nursing home.
She is survived by one stepdaughter, Eula Myers of Tappahannock; a stepson, Billy Richards of Hustle; nine step-grandchildren; three nieces, Rebecca Fortune of Washington, D.C., Ida Jeter of Sparta and Margo Keeles of Richmond; eight nephews, Leon Roy of Sparta, Irving Roy and Curtis Roy of Supply, Edward Roy of Indiana, Sherman Roy of Fredericksburg, Michael Johnson of Tennessee, Robert “Boo Top” Fortune of Hustle and Thomas “Tom” Fortune of Chance.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 24, at Washington Funeral Home, 1404 Tappahannock Blvd., Tappahannock.

David Mark Campbell

David Mark Campbell, 49, of King George County died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Campbell lived in King George for 10 years. He loved working, gardening and his animals. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Jenkins.
Survivors include his father and mother, David Campbell Jr. and Delores Bliss Campbell of King George; sisters Nora Greer of King George and Diane Sill of Springfield; his grandmother, Nora Fitzgerald of Amherst County; aunts Mary Berberich of Mount Carmel, Ill., Marian Wood of Madison Heights and Shirley Gates of Alexandria; great- aunt Edna Bliss of Alexandria; five nephews; one niece; one great-nephew; and numerous cousins.
A funeral was held Tuesday, July 27, at Fletcher’s Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Elfie Finn-McKenzie officiating. Interment followed in Fletcher’s Chapel cemetery.

Robbie Waller Allen, Jr.

Robbie Waller Allen Jr., 82, of Virginia Beach passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth.
Robbie was born March 29, 1928, in Bowling Green, the son of the late Robbie W. Allen Sr. and Alma D. Allen. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Diane Williams Allen.
He is survived by two sisters, Alma Marsh of Falmouth, and Ella Doster of Richmond; four daughters, Donna Allen Coley(Michael), of King George County, Robin Roland(Bob), of Fayetteville, N.C., Shelley Leader(Malcom), of Dickinson, Texas, and Susan Cohn(Sheldon), of Virginia Beach; two sons, Don (Cindy), of Lothian, Md., and Darrell(Merritt), of Tijeras, N.M.; five grandchildren, David Roland, Darcy Flynn, Brendan Allen, Rebecca Cohn and Molly Cohn; and two great-grandchildren, Kia Baron and Donny Roland.
Robbie served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring in 1966. The remainder of his career was spent in defense contracting. An ardent advocate of continuing education, his proudest accomplishments were earning his B.S. degree from the University of Maryland in 1971, and watching all six of his children graduate from college.
Upon retirement, Robbie and Diane loved traveling together, their favorite destinations being Hawaii, Thailand and Disney World. He spent his last years in Virginia Beach, enjoying the ocean front, the symphony and opera.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at the Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel on the grounds of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, with the Rev. Jack A. Marcom Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at noon in Quantico National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any institution of education or a symphony orchestra of one’s choice, or to the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, Box 998, Quantico, Va. 22134-0998.

Ronnie B. Webb

Ronnie B. Webb of Wicomico Church, Va. departed this life on July 22nd, 2010 after a brave battle with cancer.  Ronnie was born on April 10, 1943 as the youngest of six children to Vernon and Addie Webb.  He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers -   Henley Webb, Herbert Webb and James Webb. 
Ronnie is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, William and Shirley Webb of Lottsburg; his sister, Catherine Cross, of Baltimore, Md., two sons, Allen Webb and wife Lori of King George, Va. and  Ronnie Webb, Jr. of Lancaster, Va.; four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren to include Sarah Webb (OK), Elizabeth Webb (CA),
Matthew Webb (VA) , Addie Webb (VA), Dameon Hinson (VA), Taylor Hinson (SC), Christian Hinson (VA), Bryce Hinson (VA), Jared O’Connell (VA); one great-granddaughter, Amy Grace Webb of San Diego, CA, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and a faithful friend, Ann Atkins, of Richmond, Va.
Ronnie was formerly employed by Lillian Lumber Company and had been retired for several years, having been a life-long resident of the Northern Neck.  He also loved music and was in several country bands as a bass guitar player earlier in his life. 
He helped entertain many local residents at various events throughout the area.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Melrose United Method Church in Lottsburg, Va. at 2:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Melrose UMC Cemetery Fund.
