Area Deaths - March 17, 2010

Frances Davis Iler

Frances Davis Iler, 71, of King George County died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She was born in Dogue on Aug. 22, 1938, to the late Lloyd Douglas Davis and Nannie Muse. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Colonial Beach.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Emerson Iler; son James H. Beverly V; and grandson Lynny Childs.
Visitation and the funeral were held Saturday, March 6, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the burial in the church cemetery.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

William Richard White, Sr.

William Richard White Sr., 72, of Tappahannock died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
A member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church, Richard worked as a manager for Wilson Brothers Co., and later worked for Lowes.
Richard is survived by his wife, Lillie; a daughter, April White of Fredericksburg; a son, William R. White Jr. and his wife, Natalie, of Norfolk; a grandson, Nicholas White of Colonial Beach; a brother, James R. White and his wife, Nancy, of Pennsylvania; and a sister, Teresa Batchler of Tampa, Fla.
A funeral was held Monday, March 8, at Found & Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg,  officiated by the Rev. J. Larry Haun.
Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Peggy B. Sullivan

Peggy B. Sullivan, 69, of King George County died Monday, March 1, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mrs. Sullivan was a member of the Patawomack Indian tribe. She retired from Safeway after 30 years of service. She loved her flowers and gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Sullivan Jr. of King George; her son, Robert Shane Sullivan, and his wife, Cynthia Ann, of Fredericksburg; her daughter, Kimberly Roberson and her husband, John, of Corolla, N.C.; four brothers, Frank “Pappy” Bullock, Carlton Jack Bullock, Roger “Bow Legs” Bullock and Gordon “Dootsie” Bullock; four sisters, Shirley “Lany” Holland, Joyce Brown, Carol Ann Coffey and Kathy “Tina” Harding; a half sister, Elva “Shiney” Blakley; three half brothers, Delma Bullock, Spencer Jett and Clyde Jett; her sisters-in-law, Catherine Phillips, and Pat Decatur and her husband, Bob; her grandson, Justin Sullivan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Friday, March 5, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. H. Lowell Self officiating. Interment followed in Hulls Memorial Baptist Church cemetery in Falmouth.

Ollie Stansbury Burton Sr.

Ollie Stansbury Burton, Sr., 92, of Stafford County died peacefully on Monday, March 8, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Burton was born and raised in the Holly Corner area of Stafford. He retired from the plumbing and heating profession.
Survivors include his sons, O.S. Burton Jr. of Stafford, and David Burton and his wife, Ann, of Dale City; a daughter, Thelma Brown and her husband, Wilson, of King George County; a sister, Christine Sealy of Spotsylvania County; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held  Friday, March 12, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. Willis A. Dempsey officiating. Interment  followed in Hartwood Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Jennie C. Holmes

Mrs. Jennie C. Holmes, 78, of Appomattox, and formerly of Fredericksburg, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Southside Community Hospital in Farmville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David; her brother Raymond; and her great- granddaughter Skye Mercedes Roberts.
Mrs. Holmes is survived by eight children: Margaret Dinkins of Saint Augustine, Fla.; Barbara Tappen of Appomattox; Kenneth Holmes and Evelyn Byies, both of Spotsylvania County; Clayton Holmes of Appomattox;, Elaine Tolson of King George County; Jeannette Davis of Chesapeake City, Md; and Darrell Holmes of Appomattox; one brother, Gene Cullins of Brownington Center, Vt.; 26 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and devoted friend Jean Frankovich.
A funeral was held at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, Friday, March 12,  with  interment following in Culpeper National Cemetery.
Mrs. Holmes requested that memorial contributions in her name be made to the American Cancer Society.

Melvin Randolph Mardres

Melvin Randolph Mardres, 85, of Hyattsville, Md., and Colonial Beach, died Monday, March 8, 2010. A graveside service and interment was held Friday, March 12,  in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville.

Pamela Audrey Morgan

Pamela Audrey “Pam” Morgan, 41, of Colonial Beach, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Survivors include her dad, George W. “Billy” Smoot; her sister, Elizabeth Marie Whittaker; two brothers, Bryan W. Smoot and Stephen Patrick Smoot; her sister-in-law, Tiffiny Pratt; her brother-in-law, Joseph C. Whittaker Sr; four nieces and two nephews; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral was held  Sunday, March 14, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with burial to take place in the Popes Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Baynesville.

Mildred Barker Grigsby

Mildred Barker Grigsby, 92, of Rollins Fork went from this life to eternity on Sunday, March 7, 2010.
Mildred was born at Leedstown on Dec. 21, 1917, to Lawrence John Barker and Myrtle Hynson Barker. She married the late James Maurice Grigsby Jr. and moved with him to Rollins Fork, where she remained until her death.
She was a member of Welcome Grove Baptist Church in Warsaw.
She is survived by her daughters Jackie Mahan of Port Royal and Debbie Blakley and her husband, Billy, of King George County; two half brothers, Bobby and Wayne Barker of Westmoreland County, 13 grandchildren, Donnie, Wayne, Dawn, Peter, B.J., George, Brian, Becky, Frankie, Millie, Josh, Kim and Chip; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Betty Fisher and son-in-law Donald; her son, Bubby Grigsby; daughter Geraldine Scott; and grandson Bradd Scott.
A memorial service was held  Tuesday, March 16, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Oak Grove, with the Rev. Willard Bowen and the Rev. Richard Headley officiating. Burial will be private.

Dorothy May Evans

Dorothy May “Dot” Evans, 86, of Colonial Beach died Wednesday, March 10, 2010.  Born May 27, 1923, in Washington, D.C., she was a retired night chief operator for AT&T.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas B. Evans; her daughter and son, Kristine and Jeff Guido; grandchildren Lea, Frank and Tori; great-grandchildren Lauren, Evan and Meghan; nieces and nephews Charles Tommy Hill, Julia Hill, Patrick W. Cator and Donna Cator, as well as other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held  Monday, March 15, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Colonial Beach, with the Rev. Ron Okrasinski officiating. Burial will be private.

Joy K. Drummond

On Monday, March 8, 2010, Joy Kendall Drummond went to be with God after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her son Michael, who we know was waiting with Jesus to welcome her.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dorsey, who feels blessed with the long life they had together. Children left to miss her are Dorsey, his wife, Cathy, and children DJ, Cooper, and Ricky of Manassas; Donald and his wife, Debbie, of Westmoreland County; Dennis, his wife, Teresa, and children Katie, Sean , Donald and Alysa of Stafford County; Debra, her husband, Mike, and children Ben and Meghan of Woodbridge; and daughter-in-law Jyl Drummond and her children, Joseph and Emily of Bristow. She is blessed with one great-grandchild, Krystal, daughter of Sean.
Through the last few years, she has received help and support of many family members and friends, as well as from Capital Hospice and the ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) Association. If you would like to remember Joy, please consider these two organizations. The family wishes to thank everyone for their kindness and prayers.

James W. Keister

James W. Keister, 71, of King George County passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010.
He resided with his daughter, Darlene, and her husband, Rae Taylor, of King George. He is also survived by three sons: James Keister and his wife, Iris, of Water View, George Keister and his wife, Maria, of Cape Corals Fla., and Gerald Keister of Fredericksburg; four grandchildren Joe Stone, Elizabeth Keister, Taylor Keister, and Kristen Keister; and three great-grandchildren, Mariah Stone, David Duffin and Joey Moss. He was preceded in death by grandson Nathan Keister.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Zachary Norman Connor

Zachary Norman Connor, 19 was received in the arms of God on Sunday February 21, 2010. He was born August 10, 1990, in Clinton, MD and lived in Hershey PA and McLean VA before the family relocated to King George. He is survived by his stepbrother, Christopher Buchanan of Dallas TX;  his sister, Tiffany Connor, stepsister/cousin, Kendra Harrod and parents David and Barbara Buchanan all of King George and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
He graduated from KGHS with honors at 16 and was a junior at VCU in Richmond.  Zachary was the founder of CHOICES, an organization he began to help troubled teens.
His Memorial Celebration will be held at the King George Community Center on Friday, March 19, 2010 from 1-3PM. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations of any amount to CHOICES, PO Box 7, Ninde, VA 22526, to assist the family keeping Zachary’s dream alive.

John Eldon Hanna, Jr.

John Eldon Hanna, Jr., 78, of Winchester, Virginia died, Monday, February 22, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Hanna was born in 1931, in Alexandria, Louisiana, the only child of the late John E. Hanna and Julia M. Patton.  He was a graduate of Russellville High School, the University of Arkansas and a graduate student of Ohio State University.  
Mr. Hanna was a retired Civil Servant, with 34 years of distinguished service with the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center, the U. S. Navy Hydrographic Office and the Defense Mapping Agency.  He was a Veteran, having served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, aboard the USS Kearsarge, CVA-33, as an Aviation Electronics Technician, 2nd Class.
 Mr. Hanna was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winchester, a deacon, member of the E.T. Clark Men’s Bible Class, the Singin’ Seniors Choir and served on various boards and committees.  He was a member of the Clan Hannay Society, Scotland, United Kingdom.
He married Betty L. Hanna, on January 27, 1951, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
 Surviving with his loving wife of 59 years are two sons, Mark D. Hanna and wife, Andrea, of Ashburn, VA, Bradley L. Hanna and wife, Deborah, of King George, VA; five grandchildren, Jessica T. Brewer and husband, Terry J., of Waynesboro, PA, David B. Hanna of Frederick MD, Stephanie R. Hanna of Herndon, VA, Erin L. Hanna and Sean B. Hanna each of Fredericksburg, VA; one great grandson, Michael K. Brewer of Waynesboro, PA; his God-daughter, Jayme-Lee Mauro of Littleton, MA. Also surviving are his first cousin, Edmond Parson, of Houston, TX and former daughter-in-law, Karyn J. Hanna of Frederick, MD.
A Celebration of Life Service was conducted on Saturday, Feb. 27, at First Baptist Church of Winchester with Reverend George H. Fletcher officiating.  A private interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, at a later date.
The family received friends on Friday evening at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, Virginia.

Shirley D. Hayes

Shirley D. “Chicken” Hayes, 78, of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Survivors include his brother, Frank Hayes, and his sister, Rosa Hayes, both of Colonial Beach.
A funeral was held  Saturday, March 6, at New Monrovia Baptist Church, with the Rev. Welford McDowney officiating. Burial was in Sharp Hill Cemetery, King George.

John Francis Blom

Mr. John Francis Blom, 71, of King George County passed away Monday, March 1, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. His family was by his side.
John was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and loved stock car races. He was retired from the Stafford County school system as an electrician and served in the Navy.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Palma “Pam” Jett Blom; his son, Stuart Michael Blom and his wife, Lisa, of King George; two grandchildren, Garret Michael and Justin Thomas Blom; two sisters, Margaret Schill of Liverpool, N.Y., and Chris Mooney of Woodbridge; and one brother, Charles Blom of Syracuse, N.Y. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Jack and Jill.
The family received friends at the Mullins & Thompson Funeral Services, Fredericksburg Chapel,  Thursday, March 4, p.m., and the funeral was held there Friday, March 5,  with the Rev. Willis Dempsey officiating.
Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Harald A. Harbord

Harald A. Harbord, 71, of Fredericksburg passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Harbord.
Mr. Harbord is survived by his daughters, Ramona Ventura and her husband, Al, of King George County, Diana Foster and her husband, Bob, of Fredericksburg, and Anita Rock and her husband, Joe, of Fredericksburg; his five grandchildren, Caitlin Ventura, Casey and Travis Foster, and Megan and Michael Rock; and his friend and companion, Lotte Albowski.
Harald served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1078.
A funeral was held Saturday, March 6, in the chapel at Laurel Hill Funeral Home. A private interment will be held in Quantico National Cemetery.

Mildred Kathleen Lail

Mildred Kathleen Lail, 79, of Stafford County passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at her residence, with her family by her side.
Mrs. Lail was born March 16, 1930, in North Carolina to Willie and Betty Rayfield Carpenter. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lail was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carlos Lail, and a brother, Paul Carpenter.
She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Licurgo and husband Bill of Colonial Beach, Rita Duvall of Stafford, and Shirley Matthews and husband Scott of Woodbridge; and one son, David Wayne Lail and wife Beverly of Manassas; eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Sunday, March 7, at Mullins &Thompson Funeral Home, Stafford Chapel, 186 Shelton Shop Road, where a funeral was held  Monday, March 8, with interment  in Stafford Memorial Garden.

Wayne Douglas Chittum

Wayne Douglas Chittum, 75, of Colonial Beach died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Chittum was born Nov. 6, 1934, in Rockbridge County, son of the late Howard D. and Nellie Ardella Chittum, but was raised by his late uncle and aunt William E. and Gladys G. Niceley. He also was predeceased by his wife, Molly Ann Chittum, and his brother, Charles H. Chittum. He is survived by one daughter, Abby Lynn Chittum of Colonial Beach.
The family received  friends Saturday, March 6, at Royston Funeral Home, Marshall, where a funeral was held Sunday, March 7, with the Rev. Jimmy Rodgers officiating. Interment will be in Carter Cemetery.

Yvonne Diane P. Chapman

Yvonne Diane Pollard Chapman, 46, of Durham, N.C., formerly of Tappahannock, departed this life Thursday, March 4, 2010.
She is survived by her husband, Alton Chapman Sr.; three sons, Aaron Terrell Chapman, Alton Chapman Jr. and godson Timothy Faison, all of North Carolina; her parents, Thomas Jr. and Julia Ann Pollard, a sister, Juanita Pollard, and a brother, Thomas L. Pollard, all of Tappahannock.
A funeral was held Tuesday, March 9, at First Union Baptist Church, Rexburg, with Rev. Milton Robinson, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Washington Funeral Home, Tappahannock.

Lynn Flood Osborne

Lynn Flood Osborne, 79, of Montross died Monday, March 1, 2010, at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond. No service is planned at this time.

Kate Bell Gray

Kate Bell Gray, 90 of Fredericksburg went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at her home.
Born and raised in Essex County, Kate moved to Fredericksburg as a young woman. Kate was married to the late Thomas A. Gray. She was affectionately known to family and friends as Katie Bell.
Upon moving to Fredericksburg, Kate worked at Mary Washington College. She later became employed at Mary Washington Hospital in the dietary department. She retired from the hospital after more than 30 years of service. Although retired, Kate continued to work for many years as a companion aid.
Kate was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She loved social functions with family and friends, and was very active in local politics and neighborhood civic meetings.
Survivors include one son, Winston and his wife, Brenda, of Spotsylvania County; two daughters, Cynthia and her husband, Howard, of Spotsylvania and Sheila and her husband, Sherman, of Fredericksburg; one brother, William “Dick” Mercer of Fredericksburg; nine grandchildren, Deborah Smith of Philadelphia, Pa., Sarah Cook of Spotsylvania, Robin Gray of Nanjemoy, Md., Cynthia Brown of Sandstone, Michelle Paige of Fredericksburg, Amanda Mobley of Spotsylvania, Colette Price of Spotsylvania, Rosaline Gooden of Lanham, Md., and Scarlet Smith of Fredericksburg; two sisters-in-law, Emmaline Gray of Fredericksburg and Mary Sue Gray of Spotsylvania; two brothers-in-law, Wilbur Gray of King George County and Gould Gray of Tappahannock; and 14 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Charles Thomas Gray, and her brother, Herbert Douglas Mercer.
A funeral was held at noon Friday, Feb. 26, at Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site), Fredericksburg.
The family received friends at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home.

Robert ‘Earl’ Byrnes

Robert “Earl” Byrnes, 56, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, in Palm Bay, Fla., where he lived with his wife, Brenda, and great-grandson Xavier Byrnes.
A Celebration of Life open house was held at the Prince William County Police Association Hall, 14288 Independent Hill Dr., Manassas, Va. 20112, on Sunday, Feb. 28.
Earl grew up in Manassas, then moved to Spotsylvania County in 1980, where he settled until 1999, when he moved to Florida.
He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Earl and Mary Byrnes.
He is survived by his son, Robert Byrnes; daughter-in-law Christine; granddaughters Jessica and Jenna, both of Fredericksburg; his former wife and mother of Robert, Donna Beauchamp, of Montross; one daughter, one son, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother-in-law by marriage; one brother, Michael Byrnes and wife Virginia of Spotsylvania; six sisters, Mary Smith Bullington of Gainesville, Ruth Kathleen Sharp of Dale City, Teresa Byrnes of Spotsylvania, Dorothy Shifflett and husband Joseph of Caret, Barbara Quinn and husband Patrick of Manassas and Dianne Bryant and husband Darron of Woodford; 16 nieces and nephews, and 15 great-nieces and -nephews.

Christine K. Hiltner

Christine K. Hiltner , 78, of Montross, formerly of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at her son’s residence in King George County.
Mrs. Hiltner worked as a bookkeeper for Silvey Chevrolet in Fredericksburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bergen “Buddy” Hiltner.
Survivors include her son, Eric Hiltner of King George; her sister, Annastasia Czika of Georgia; and her step- brother, Rickey Kupreanik of North Carolina.
A service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 27, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Interment will be private.

Sarah Hales Cooke

Sarah Hales Cooke, 90 of Colonial Beach passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Cooke, in 1990. She was a lifelong house-wife, dedicated to the care of her family and a committed servant to her Lord through her church, Colonial Beach Baptist.
She is survived by her sons, Elton and his wife, Barbara, of Arusha, Tanzania;  Donald and his wife, Carolyn, of Westmoreland County; Ralph of Henrico County, and Kenneth and his wife, Vicki, of Colonial Beach; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; her brother, Nick and his wife, Thelma, of Colonial Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held on Monday, March 1, at the Colonial Beach Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Almond and the Rev. Bob Higgins officiating. Burial was at Round Hill Baptist Church cemetery, followed by a reception that was hosted by the WMU of Colonial Beach Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Donald, Christopher, Brian, Travis, Ryan, Tyler, Joshua and Tevin. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. H. Lowell Self officiating. Interment will follow in Hulls Memorial Baptist Church cemetery in Falmouth.
Pallbearers will be Kurt Decatur, Kevin Phillips, Hubert Roberson, Robert P. Sullivan, Dakota Decatur and Jesse Madison.

Norman T. Shafer

Norman Thomas Shafer, 75, of King George County died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Shafer had retired from the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant.
Survivors include his children, Petra Primbs, Helmut Shafer, Melvin Shafer, Norman Shafer, Debbie Lucas and Ramona Dishong; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.  A service will be held in Falls City, Nebraska at a later date.

Vera Fauntleroy Pratt

Vera Fauntleroy Pratt, 66, of Tappahannock departed this life Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, in Richmond. She was a longtime employee of Interbake Foods.
She is survived by two daughters, Vera Ann Fortune of Richmond and Juanita Croxton of Tappahannock; two sisters, Gloria Fauntleroy of Tappahannock and Ida Smith of Richmond; and one brother, Leslie Fauntleroy of Tappahannock.
Visitation was held at New Liberty Baptist Church, Beazley. A funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 20, at the church, with the Rev. Willie T. Carter, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Jonathan Leroy Ellis

Jonathan Leroy Ellis, 37, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Millers Tavern, departed this life Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, in a Washington hospital.
He is survived by his parents, Allen and Beverly Ellis; grandmother Ruth Wright of Warsaw; two daughters, Keinyna Ellis of Tappahannock, and Jaylen Ellis of Maryland; one son, Deonte “De” Ellis of Colonial Beach; and one sister, NaTsha Ellis of Fredericksburg.
A viewing was held at Washington Funeral Home, Tappahannock. The funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 20, at Union Hope Baptist Church, Center Cross, with the Rev. Alvin Hargrove, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Jimmy Roger Brimmer

Jimmy Roger Brimmer, 52, of Tappahannock departed this life Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, in a Richmond hospital.
He is survived by one daughter, Marquita Brimmer of Fredericksburg; one son, Jovan Jones of Bowling Green; two sisters, Ella L. Brimmer and Ellese Beney, both of Tappahannock; and two brothers, Lewis Brimmer of Brandywine, Md., and Peter Brimmer of Tapphannock.

Henry L. Conway

Henry L. Conway, 57, of Fredericksburg passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center.
He was born in King George County to the late Charles and Agnes Conway.
Henry is  survived by three children, Nathaniel Cox of Fredericksburg, and Tasha Conway and Tonya Conway, both of Pennsylvania; a brother, Michael Conway; and four sisters, Patricia Joseph, Dianne Conway, Gloria Conway and Mildred Conway.
Henry’s family received friends Sunday, Feb. 21, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A funeral was held Monday, Feb. 22, at the funeral chapel, with Pastor William T. Frye officiating. Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

John Feilding Keys

John Feilding Keys, 96, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2010, at his home in Washington, D.C. Born Dec. 12, 1913, he was the son of Carrie Johnson and John Feilding Keys.
Mr. Keys worked in the construction and building business. He was greatly loved by a host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins and by devoted relatives and friends.
Services will be on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Little Ark Baptist Church, Dahlgren, with viewing from 11 a.m. until the funeral at noon.

Karen Leigh Parks

Karen Leigh Parks, 49, of Woodford died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.
Born in Virginia Beach, she was a great mom, grandmother, aunt, friend and caretaker. She was preceded in death by her mother, Claudia Jarvis Morrow, and her stepfather, Norman Morrow.
Survivors include her two daughters, Lisa Barrett and her husband, George II, of Colonial Beach and Collette Douglas and her husband, James, of North Dakota; her father, Joseph Lee “Jay” Bailey; four grandchildren, Mason and Bret Barrett and Cheyanne and Jordan Douglas; a brother, Joseph Bailey; a half brother, Jeffrey Morrow; a stepbrother, Norman Morrow Jr.; a stepsister, Candy Morrow; and three nieces, Brandy, Heather and Angelina Turner.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Potomac Baptist Church, King George.

Clara R. Smith, 84, of Colonial Beach died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She is survived by her son, Charles Smith of Fredericksburg, and her sister, Mary Jackson of Montclair, N.J.

Hilda Case Hartman

Hilda Case Hartman, 87, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Carroll “Stix” Hartman.
She is survived by one daughter and the wife of the late Earl C. Vanover III, Nancy H. Vanover of Montross; four grandchildren, Courtney Johnston, Marti Combs and husband Matt, Earl C. Vanover IV, and Cole B. Vanover; and five great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by grandson Casey Miller.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Old Andrew Chapel Cemetery in Stafford.

Gudrun Loew Kosmahly

Gudrun Loew Kosmahly, 77, of Mineral died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital, after a 18-month battle with colon cancer.
A native of Germany, she made her home in Mineral after marrying the late Dr. Gerhard Kosmahly in 1999. She proudly became a U.S. citizen in July of 2008.
Gudrun was an accomplished seamstress as well as talented in knitting, crocheting, painting pottery and many other handcrafts. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, and working in her garden. Her family and friends were the glad beneficiaries of all her talents.
She is survived by two sons, Hans-Peter Loew and Alexander Loew of Germany; and her granddaughter, Anna Loew Stevenson of Missouri. Other survivors include her stepdaughters, Helga K. Gallahan of Colonial Beach and Karen K. Wiles of Mechanicsville.
Per Gudrun’s request, there will be no service and in the spring her ashes will be scattered in the meadow behind her home near the woods where she and her husband always enjoyed watching the deer.

Mary E. Clark

Mary E. Clark, 84, formerly of Dahlgren, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Memorial Regional Hospital in Richmond.
She is survived by one son, Frank Clark II of Richmond; two daughters, Lou Ann Epps of Fredericksburg and Rosa Smith of Ravena, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Perry Scranage Sr. of Dahlgren; and three sisters, Juanita Washington, Margie Bumbrey and Pansy Bumbrey.
A funeral will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Arm of the Lord Ministries, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Robert Brown officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, in Quantico National Cemetery.
Remains may be viewed from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, and also one hour prior to the service.

Area Deaths - February 10, 2010

Gertrude D. Henry

Gertrude D. Henry, 88, of Pequannock, N.J., died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
Born in Jersey City, she was a longtime Lincoln Park resident, retiring to Sebring, Fla., and moving to Pequannock in 2002. Mrs. Henry was a homemaker and worked in area laundromats owned by her husband, Dick, who predeceased her in August 1999.
Survivors include her sons, Martin of King George County, William of Branchville, N.J., Richard of Lake Hopatcong, N.J., and Robert of Pequannock; two brothers, Bill Lisa and John Lisa; sister Joan D’Agostino; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A visitation was held Saturday, Feb. 6, at Keri Memorial Funeral Home, , followed by private cremation.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

James Maurice Brown

Retired U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. James Maurice Brown, 71, of Ellicott City, Md., formerly of King George County, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at Howard County Hospital.
A 1957 graduate of Ralph Bunche High School, Mr. Brown served in the Air Force for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Edna Brown of Ellicott City; two daughters and a stepson; and his sister, Phyllis Ashton of King George.
A funeral will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 11, at Good Hope Baptist Church, King George, with the Rev. Robert Williams Jr. officiating.
His remains may be viewed one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Douglas F. Jones

Douglas F. Jones, 69, of the Brooke Community in Stafford County died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Mr. Jones was a native of Stafford and the son of the late Almon and Bessie Jones. He was a graduate of Stafford High School and a longtime farmer. Mr. Jones was also a member of Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Janet Jones; two daughters, Sherri Jones of Colonial Beach and Stafford, and Gina M. Smith and her husband, Roger, of Stafford; four grandchildren, James G. Kirtley Jr. of Colonial Beach, Heather R. Kirtley of Spotsylvania County, Victoria N. Smith of Stafford, and Michael L. Smith of Stafford; two great-granddaughters, Katelyn and Sarah Kirtley; one brother, Jack A. Jones and his wife, Ruby, of Meadows of Dan; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Vernon, and a brother, John R. Jones.
A funeral will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 11, at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, with the Rev. Renee Teague officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mansfield Montague, John Rowe, Leonard Conyers, Clarence Bowling, James G. Kirtley Jr., Billy Shelton, Spencer Hudson and Leon Law.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the funeral home.

Paul Charlton Heslop

Paul Charlton Heslop’s love for life ended on January 23, 2010, in his home in Springfield, Virginia, after a three year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Paul was born in Kingston, PA on June 22, 1938 to Frank C. Heslop and Dorothy B. Heslop.  He graduated from Shavertown High School in June of 1956; he enlisted in the Air Force shortly after.  He spent the next twenty years working closely with the CIA in communications.  He traveled extensively, and was stationed in Japan, England, Italy, and Turkey.  He also resided in Nebraska, Texas, and California.  After he retired, he graduated from California State University, Sacramento, with a degree in business.  He then owned a successful landscaping business in Ell Dorado Hills, California.  He relocated to the East Coast to be with family and friends in 2002.
Paul was married in England to Maureen Evans in December of 1959.  The marriage ended in divorce but they remained close friends.  They have a daughter Sherry Heslop-Dazy, and a son in law, Kenneth R. Dazy, of Colonial Beach, VA.  They have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Paul was preceded in death by two daughters, Jenine Louise Heslop and Leslie Lynn Brickner, and his sister, Jane Kerns.
At the time of his death, Paul and his significant other,  best friend Beverly Adams resided in Springfield, VA.  Family includes daughter Kimberly Flora; son, Matthew Adams, and five grandchildren.
Services will be held on February 15, 2010 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, in Colonial Beach, VA.  
Interment will be held in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens (formerly, Historyland Memorial Park), King George, following the service.
Paul and his family would like to extend their gratitude to John Hopkins Hospital and Oncology department for all the love, care, and support that Paul received during his struggle over the last three years.  His quality of life would not have been the same without their excellent care.
Paul will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
