25 Years and counting…
March
2007 will make twenty six years since William J Newton, better known as
J of J’s Cars, opened his doors for business. “My dad sold me this
land and with a seven thousand dollar loan against a two thousand
dollar piece of property, I purchased 5 cars and the rest is history”,
J began. “I thought I had a budget in those early days, but I found
out that I was way off. It was common to have to count every penny
each week to see whether or not we had enough to cover the bills”. J
visits the Manheim Auto Auction each week in Pennsylvania and brings
back cars for his lot as well as cars his customers have asked him to
search for. “Probably half of my business these days is custom
buying”, J explained.
King George resident Bo Branham will attest
to how fortunate he is to have J as his car dealer. “I have purchased
at least twenty cars from J over the years. I can call him and ask
what’s sitting at the auction and if the car I have in mind is there, I
can ask him to get me a certain color and he will bring it home”, Bo
stated. When asked why he has stayed with J all these years, Bo
replied, “simple customer service, he cares about what you want, it’s
as simple as that”. J admits that while car dealers may have a
reputation for being unscrupulous, he takes his customer’s satisfaction
very seriously. “It keeps me awake at night if someone has trouble with
a car that I’ve sold them; I think you should treat people the way you
want to be treated. This is more a people business than a car
business”, he said.
The car sales business has its highs and lows
like any other business. J can remember when he had booming years of
500 plus sales and the years when things were tight. “Right now we
sell about 400 cars a year with half our customers coming from
Maryland”. Customers from Maryland make the trip over the Harry Nice
Bridge because of J’s level of commitment to customer satisfaction.
That type of commitment is a rarity among car dealerships. The more
common cut throat atmosphere of dealers everywhere is exactly what
brings customers to J’s.
J gives credit for the smooth operation
of the dealership to Doug Trew, his general manager of eight years.
“Doug does everything from ordering small parts to selling cars”, J
said. “This business truly wouldn’t be what it is without Doug”, J
added. John (Mutt) Burgess is also a vital part of the J’s Cars team.
“Mutt is our road warrior. Whenever there is anything to be picked up
or delivered, no matter where or what time, Mutt is who I call”, J
explained. New to the team at J’s is office manager Elizabeth
Mullins. She has been working at J’s for four months and is much
appreciated all ready.
J has never forgotten the hard work
involved with getting his business off the ground, and though his
reputation for fairness has helped carry his business forward, he is
quick to point out how thankful he is to the community for helping his
business become the success that it is. A long time supporter of King
George Little League and sponsor of many organizations throughout the
area, J believes it’s a privilege to give back to the people who make
this area a great place to live. Thank you for twenty five years, J and
best wishes for many more!
